Anyone running the new Bilstein 24-248730 / 24-249966 shocks? Opinions?

Just wanted to bump this thread because I'm looking at the 4Runner specific Bilstein 5100s (Front: 24-248730, Rear: 24-249966).

Is anyone running these or know how they compare to the Tundra 5100s? Every thread I find seems to mention that they exist but stops short of ride impressions (or in the case of this thread end up talking about the 6112s).

FWIW, i'm running Rear: 24-249966 with OME 906 with 10mm OME spacers. I always have roughly 50lbs in the back. No complaints, rides a bit stiffer than factory suspension.

I can't comment about the fronts as I run toytec coilovers.

From my research...
if your 4runner is stock, then the 4runner 5100's would be better

if your armored, then the tundra 5100's would be better -> I have these un-armored and like the ride, very 'truck' like

the tundra gives better weight control vs the 4runners 5100

on the 6112's... IDK.

That's what I thought. I don't plan on much armor besides sliders and possibly tube front/rear bumpers which aren't much heavier than stock. Paired with the 906s and 880s or 881s I think it'll be a good fit for my use case.

I'm not interested in the 6112's, I just feel like every thread on the newer 5100s somehow ended up talking about them haha.

I'll be sure to update once I have the 4Runner 5100s installed.

I'll be ordering these to go with my new OME 880/906 coils.

EDIT: I might be an idiot....I installed the 4 Runner 5100's not the ones pictured above.

I just installed mine with 906 rears 2k ago, and finally got the fronts with 880's done today. I had to wait over a month to get into the alignment shop.

Anyway my experience so far has been BILSTEIN'S CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS BALLS!! THEY ALSO EXPECT YOU TO USE YOUR OLD WORN OUT CRAP FOR THE FRONT INSTALLS!! AND NO THEY WONT DO CRAP TO HELP YOU OUT! I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND THEM AND IN FACT WILL TELL EVERYONE SAID INFO.

Whoa!! Lost a little focus there but I'm back. I guess you wanted to know how my driving experience with them has been. Running KO2's the back was pretty skittish on washboard roads and frost heaved pavement. They are smooth but stiff on normal pavement. I would prefer a little softer dampening....but I can't afford to be buying new stuff....so I will live with them. Not terrible riding...but this is not a TRUCK...its a light ass little SUV...so softer dampening I think would give it better overall traction/manners. I only have 100 miles on the fronts and nothing on rough roads. Comparing the feel over rail road tracks, curbs, and other things I drive over on the pavement...they feel about like the rears so far.

You have the 4Runner specific 5100s? Your experience surprises me since from what I've been able to find they shouldn't be as "truck" like as the Tundra ones which few people complain about.

Also, sorry about your Bilstein experience...I've only had good experiences with them.

Yes...same info I had as you on the Tundra version....was definitely a no go. Personally....I probably should have just kept the 4600's instead of sending them back. Buuuut I got all hung up on the extra "lift" intent of the 5100's, and the 880/906 would give me a little lift. These work as a shock...and it's only one opinion. On a scale of 10 being OEM ride..(I have a 14 with mid 20k on it) and 1 being the 256K original I replaced. I put these at about 7.

Don't apologize for Bilsteins BS...well unless you are a decision maker for them. They were nice...but their lack of providing need parts on a very expensive shock is BS. When I asked where I could get the need parts I was nicely told "I don't know you will have to find those yourself". Again that is a policy decision way above the poor guy with a computer screen in front of him answering questions. Luckily their stickers come right off the shock super easy.

It gets me every time [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
Hey, I'm not sure where you're from, but- if you wanna pay shipping- I'll send you my Tundra 4600's, and you can give em a try on your rig. They're too soft for me, and I'd like to help you out too. Shoot me a PM if you're interested [emoji1360]
I haven't tried the 4Runner specific 5100 rear shocks, but I have ran the 33-187174- which is the 5100 for the 4th/5th gen 4R with a 2" lift. These are the shocks ToyTec recommended for their Superflex springs, before they came out with their BOSS line shocks.
I'm guessing valving is very similar, and I was very happy with them with my Superflex springs. They were still a hair soft for me, but I'm not sure if there is a better option(in my budget).
As far as the people talking about Tundra shocks, the rears are different lengths than the 4R shocks- so keep that in mind. It will change your suspension travel.

So they have been sitting on the shelf for a while now, trying to time it with TBU and rear brake rebuild, planning on next weekend, I will let you know how it goes! I really don't wheel enough to necessitate resi's, as much as I would love to have them?

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but I didn’t want to have to make a new thread if I didn’t have to and this thread is the only thing I could find that talked specifically about the 4Runner specific Bilstein 5100. (730/966).

Originally I was looking to do a 3” lift but have now settled on a 2” lift. It seems it is better suited for these shocks as they seem to max out at around a 2” lift. It also seems better for 265/70/16 tires, and makes it so you have less to change with the factory set up such as diff drop.

What would be the best spring setup to achieve a 2” lift with the 5100’s? I am hoping to get a decent ride while on the pavement (close to stock) while still being able to handle light off-road. I am looking at the ome options but am open to other options.

With 316k miles, I replaced the front tall coils in my '99 with OEM, and the rear with OME 906, after reading up on it in some other threads. Also went with Bilstein 5100 (the 4Runner version). Kept the fronts at the lowest ring (recommended for original spec). Very happy with that setup. I also put on 265/75/16 tires. As for the ride, it rides like...well, a truck with a nicely tuned suspension. Opinions are going to vary, tho. I'm used to trucks, so I'm fine with it. I have no idea what the stock ride feels like, so I can't compare. Definitely not a sedan ride, but it takes bumps and potholes on/off road pretty darned well, IMO. Nice bit of lift, no mods needed. YMMV.

I’ve thought about keeping my stock fronts. Right now both my front and back fender to center of hub is about 20.5”. I figured I could use ome 906 or 890 rear springs and keep my stock fronts and set the 5100 to the second or third notch.

Will that achieve 2”. Will it ride decent? I’ve heard the 890 has a better ride than the 906. Is that true?

I measured mine before the swap, and then lost the paper I had the numbers written down on. I haven't measured anything since, but I've definitely got a full 2" of lift in the rear, and not as much in the front. I thought about going to the 2nd ring on the front struts to level things, but I'm glad I didn't. If you don't have front tails, maybe you'd want to go up a ring or two on those struts. I think I read somewhere that each ring gives about 3/8" of lift...but don't quote me on that.

As for the better ride between 890/906...I have no experience with the 890 so I can't say. I considered them, but went with the 906 because I have a 90 lb. dog and sometimes an additional 300 lbs or so of stuff in the back. Unloaded, the 906s are firm, but I'm perfectly happy with the ride on/off road. Others may not be. I drove 100 miles with the dog a couple weeks ago...2-lane rural roads. Very comfortable ride.

This is how mine looks now. Not sure how helpful this is, but it's a big improvement over the tired coils that were in it after 300k+ miles.

I've been just lurking here for a couple of years, learning and taking advantage of this great forum. My 2002 SBP Sport Edition (183k Odo) desperately needed suspension help, so while I had it in my shop to do the Tundra brake upgrade, I went with the new 24-248730 Bilsteins in the front and the 24-249966 Bilsteins in the rear, both set on the first perch, matched to OME 883s in front and 906s in the rear. I flat love the difference and the improvement in ride and handling. Picked up about 2.5 inches of lift, with an ARB bumper added to the front ( which is why I went with the 883s in front - that damn bumper is HEAVY!). Springs are still settling just a bit, so I think I'll end up with just a skosh over 2 in of lift when all is said and done. I did add a front diff drop, and went with a SS adjustable panhard rod, as well as new energy suspension poly bushings on the sway bars and steering rack, and added new OEM lower ball joints, matched with new adjustable upper control arms/ball joints. Works extremely well as a daily driver, much of which is at highway speeds, and as soon as I get my 265/75/16 Goodrich KA02s mounted ( which should net me back about another inch of height), I'm headed to the mountains of New Mexico, to see how it works there. Will report on that experience as soon as I get back!
