Anyone switching to Amsoil?

I don't want to get into a discussion about the pros/cons of Amsoil. Just wanted to know if anyone is planning on switching to it.

Their site does not have a filter for the new 4R listed yet, hope they make one eventually.

The alternative I guess would be Mobil 1. Anyone know what the OEM oil is? I know it's 0W 20 but that's about it.

I'm planning on switching. They have a customer preferred program that for $10 for 6 months or $20 a year you can get up to 20-25% off their oil. For our intervals, it probably isn't worth it unless you cant to stock up on oil (20% savings on 12 quarts is about $20), but if you have a spouse or multiple cars, it may be a good deal.

I purchased a WIX filter. Amsoil offers WIX filters as well. I'm not familiar with them, but people seem to like it. The filter model number is 57173 and I got it at O'Reilly. It fits the 2010 V6 cartridge.

I called two dealerships, and was told they use re-branded Mobil1 0W20. I went with that for the break-in change since I got the free maintenance and that's what they'll use for the next two changes. Once that's over in 2012 I'll consider other options.

If I didn't have the free maintenance for the first 2 years, I would be doing Amsoil from the start. I guess I'll start using it when my 2 years is up.

I was using Amsoil on my 2008 Tacoma, my friend uses it on his 2007 4Runner, his brother just started using it on his 1996 4Runner. My mom was using it in her 1988 4runner (my 1st vehicle) and her best friend has been using it in her 2000 Jeep Cherokee (my 2nd vehicle). I'm in charge of doing all their oil changes.

For me that $10 Amsoil Customer Preferred Discount was and still is a Great Deal. That has saved me a ton of money over the last few years. We always order the 25,000 mile Oil and their special 25,000 mile filters but still change at about 6-7,000 miles. Nice to know if we don't have the time to do an oil change, its not gonna ruin our engines.

I'm going to stick with the Toyota 0W-20. There's some discussion about it over at bobistheoilguy.com. They had it analyzed and it's not the same as the Mobil1 0W-20. The general consensus there is that the Toyota stuff looks good. Of course the proof is in the pudding and I'll have a sample tested after I go through a cycle with it.

I change the engine oil every 15k or 1 year which ever comes first
(I dont trust amsoil enough to do the 25k oil change)

amsoil is more expensive than mobil 1 and mobil 1 is just as good

Yep and change my filter every 3 months no matter mileage. NAPA spin flow Filters $5.50 are the only ones i use. changing either oil any sooner than 15k and you are just wasting money. If you dont do extended drains with synthetic might as well use regular dino oil and change it every 3k.

Mobil is good, but Amsoil is better. Countless independent tests have proved it, it is the best oil money can buy!!!! But that is just is just my worthless opinion I ran Mobil for years until I got bit by the Amsoil bug. I run mine to 25k or a year and have not had a problem...ever!!! I do however change my filter every 3-5k and top off engine.

Amsoil might be a btter choice if you put alot of miles on your engine in a short period of time or if you're near 20k miles in a year or more but if you average under 10k miles a year then Amsoil might be overkill.

I spend about a little over $30 for M1 and a Puralator PureOne filter and change my oil about every 10 months or 8000 miles whatever comes first and just got a look recently under my valve covers and at 158k miles they were surprisingly very clean and minimal varnish buildup. I should'a taken pics when they were off but didn't think of it.

I own a 2005 Toyota 4Runner with a 4.7 liter motor. I have changed the entire vehicle over to Amsoil and I am extremely impressed. My mileage has risen and the valve train noise has quieted down. I was running Mobile 1 full synthetic until I performed an oil analysis at 4200 miles and learned the oil had completely failed due to nitration. This is when I switched to Amsoil 5W-30 for the first 15,000 and then switched to Amsoil 0W-30. In the front, rear, and transfer case, I run the Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90. My lawn mower, chainsaw, ATV's, and other vehicles all run Amsoil with no problems.

I use Amsoil on my 08 Tacoma TRD off-road and the wifes 08 FJC, I just traded the Tacoma in 3 weeks ago on a 2012 SR5 4x4 and will be using Amsoil in the 4Runner, I work on turbine helicopters and know engines well and I trust this stuff. Changed every year because I don't hit 15k miles a year let alone 25K.

I have a question though: On my 08 Tacoma and FJ the filter is located above the block and on these it's on the bottom, Is there a check valve so you can change the filter without the entire oil system draining?

There is a valve on the bottom of the element canister to drain it before removing. I've been getting my filters from my Toyota dealer and it comes with the plastic piece you plug in to the valve to drain it.

Mobil 1 isn't really all it's cracked up to be. I have seen so many independent oil analysis done where the oil prematurely failed. I know it doesn't apply to our 4Runners but I have seen Mobil 1 fail in VW/Audi engines in as little as 2,000 miles due to fuel dilution that is common in direct injection engines.

Me personally I exclusively run Shell Rotella T6 in everything I own so I won't be using Amsoil but if you can afford to run the stuff do it. It's supposed to be top notch stuff.
