Anyone tint their own front window?

So I thought I'd try and save a few bucks so I bought a kit to tint the front 2 windows of my '99 SR5. I figure if it looks great, then great! And if it looks bad then I'm only out $20 or so. What I can't figure out for the life of me is how you get it on with all of the window trim/etc. on our rigs. Does it make sense to just remove the entire window? I don't see any other way to get it to the edges of the window.

Anyone done this? Any chance it looks decent?

If you haven't done tint before it can be tricky. Around me it's literally only $20 a window to get them done professionally anyway. If you are intent on DIY then plan to waste some extra tint. It took me a decent amount of time to get it right, and that was years ago. I pay to get them done now. You do NOT need to remove the window to do them right.
 
I tinted my own windows on my '87 B200 when I was 15. I took them out(including the rear solid glass) to tint them, and they turned out good. If they're already cut to size, it should be fairly easy to do with the glass in. Tint shops definitely don't take the glass out, that's for sure.
I would take a few hours to have YouTube give you some lessons and tips.
 
Locally it's 100 bucks for both fronts at a shop. I could save a few bucks but, I know if I do it myself the windows will end up looking like a carbonated drink. :ohwell:
 
I paid a guy $20 to tint my front 2 windows the same as the rear and add an oversize front window strip a few years ago, it all still looks great. Check craigslist under services for better than shop prices.

I watched him do the work, he didn't remove a thing. There's probably a youtube vid or two on how to. :cowboy:

That's a major rip off. I've seen deals for $100 for entire cars on groupon. I know I paid $45 for both front windows and the windshield strip at a very reputable shop in my area.

Labor is only one of the costs. The actual tint that is used varies a lot as well. There are many grades that have different costs. If you paid $45 you most likely got some crappy tint that will turn purple after a while.

If you think $100 is a lot of two windows you'll sh!t to hear I paid over $500 to do my Avalon.

Oh I agree. I'm only doing a tint to match my rears though so I guess that's even on the cheap end. Unfortunately that goes for everything automotive related in this area, AKA: the armpit of Oregon.

Oh I didn't know you were there when I got tinted. I got SunTek CXP tint at this shop. I'm not new to window tinting and did all my cars previously until I got sick of it. This isn't pepboys purple tint. My 4Runner windows have been tinted for years now. No color change whatsoever. I will admit I had 3 other cars done at this shop on various occasions. Maybe you would pay a ridiculous amount, but that's for stupid people.

Ceramic tint on a black on black car with a 2 year old in a car seat. It was worth the money IMHO. My wife's new Jetta is getting the same treatment. I guess that makes me double stupider.
 
you can roll the window down a bit to get the upper portions of the windows. they sell a tint tool that is a squigi with a sharp end to get all the tight spots and get all the air bubbles out. your gonna need a heat gun, and soap water thats how the tint sticks its not that bad
