I wouldn't be scared to try a tune on my 4runner, but the fact that almost nobody has done it keeps me from investigating it.
To add to the debate, I had a 2010 Xterra with a 6-speed shifter, and I'm sure the xterra was faster, but I'd bet that's just because I could wring it out it every gear. I'd say the throttle response of the Nissan was faster/crisper, but I have no data to back that up. Either way, I find I drive the 4runner MUCH less aggressively, mostly because it just doesn't respond to it (obv not built for performance) and just feels a lot more like a heavier truck. Probably a good thing, since my MPGs stay in the 18mpg range now that I drive like a grampa. I'd still entertain a tune if it were tried and true... Sometimes I do miss the torque I had in my tuned TDIs...
