Anyone Watch Top Gear?

The Jeep was pretty impressive towing that trailer on some of that terrain..

For those of you who watch the original Top Gear on BBC America.. It's great they air it over here in the US but the version on BBC America has 15 minutes of footage edited out of each episode to allow time for commercials. BBC has no commercials so each top gear episode is a full one hour long. I've downloaded all 17 seasons over the last few years so I could see the show as it was intended. Particularly on the specials and road trips you want to see those extra 15 minutes.. US viewers loose a lot of good stuff. My mom pays a TV license back home so it's all good:D

James May also has some other fun shows that might appeal to some of you. The "Toy Story" series was great.

I think Adam's method the tires still touched pavement, so he should've been DQ'ed.

I would just tell you, but it would ruin it for the rest of the members. The link is posted. It's better watch it, as I mentioned earlier, it's hilarious and one of the better Top Gear US episodes.
 
That was entertaining.

I absolutely can't imagine how they did it, though, without one or more of the following being true: Took some liberties with the no pavement claim, got some amazing waivers from various land agencies and land owners, or broke some laws.

Fun to watch, though.
 
Did you guys see the British episode where they drove the Toyota Hilux to the North Pole? The first time someone has driven there. That was one seriously badass truck and really fun episode.

There was another great episode where they tried to destroy an older Hilux.. They even put it on the top of a multistory building which was demolished with explosives. They were still able to start it afterwards.. just about.. That truck earned itself a permanent home in the top gear studio.

Anyway, Top Gear loves our trucks - even if one wasn't featured in this episode.
 
Saw that episode, it was entertaining.. A friend and I went through that same pass a few months ago (Mengel pass).. It was not difficult at all. Was a bit slippery, but both the 4th gens went right up with without having to skinny pedal it through.

Anyone notice at about 44 min into the episode they have a black FJ40 behind Tanner while they are in front of the hangar?

I agree on the comment that the bronco should have been DQed because the tires looked like they touched.

I know it was for entertainment (and it was entertaining) but why not just lay the carpet flat across the pavement? There was plenty there! And then Tanner could have also taken the trailer with him.. :nerd:
 
I call BS on the fix they gave Adam's Bronco after he broke an axle shaft. On my buddy's Jeep, we did the exact same thing after he broke an axle shaft at night on a trail (John Bull to be exact). But, we did it with a log that we strapped to the frame to hold the tire on instead of a steel square tube welded to the frame like Adam's. We cut up a 5 gal. bucket to put between the log and the tire so it wouldn't get too hot from rubbing also.

We made it off the trail, but it was only about 2 miles before his tire started smoking from the friction and it almost wore a hole in the sidewall (just like Adam's did before it popped). The difference is.. I'm supposed to believe they went hundreds of miles with it like that, but we ruined our tire after 2 miles of crawling? Buuuuuuuuuuullsheeeeeeeet.

I'm positive they fixed that axle shaft for him to complete the contest and then they welded that steel on there to make it look like a "cool" quick fix until they let it pop at the end of the show. My friend told me there's a part when they're in the sand dunes that you can see that back tire spinning kicking up sand, but regardless.. that tire would be constantly pushing hard on that steel tube and it would have popped, shredded, or melted long before he made it through the 1st canyon.

Yea that was my thought, I could have sworn I saw the back tire spin on the sand. I will have to go back and watch it for further analysis!
 
Anyone else think that Tanner is the only one with any business on that show? At least all three of the Top Gear UK guys have quite a bit of automotive knowledge. Top Gear Australia can be fun sometimes too. Especially when they do a segment on 4WDs.

Yes, Tanner has a drifting background. Rut can stay cause he's funny. But Adam, get him off the show. PLEASE!

Rut is supposed to be the "the Expert" on the show but is kinda funny. He does have some info/stats but its nothing i couldnt find on my iphone in between scenes.
 
Adam is useless on the show. I felt he hurt the episode because he just destroyed his Bronco and didn't really use it as a 4x4. He just bashed his way through purely based on the powerful engine.

Crossing the street was pretty cool. Really wish they would have chosen a Toyota though.

First off, of course everything is set up, it's a TV show, everything is scripted. I'm sure there is some improvisation, but really do you think Tanner got his truck across on the first try (also there just happened to be those materials on the side of the road)? You think Adam fixed his truck and got it unstuck by himself? They had a support team with them the entire time.

Also Adam's truck had 4wd, you could clearly see the front and rear wheels spinning in the sand dunes. I kept chuckling every time they claimed it was a 2x4.

Yeah, no doubt it's all scripted and they have a support team, helicopters, camera crew, etc.. But taking a few attempts at something and using the best take for the show, or having mechanics fix things behind the scenes is one thing. Pretending to jerry-rig a "cool" fix (while actually fixing it) and then setting it up to be broken again at the end just so it looks like their jerry-rig job worked almost the entire trip is just way too stupid for me. The UK version is smarter than that.. or they would at least point out their own mistake and turn it into something funny.

Leaving in the footage where you can see the back tires spin while Adam tells us how b!tchen he is for only having fwd just shows he's a doosh. It's a show for guys who like cars and trucks. Their demographic is smarter than they give it credit for I think. I'll still keep watching it though, I just hope Adam gets replaced.

BTW.. I saw an old rerun of that show "King of Queens" the other day and Adam was one of Doug's co-workers. Thought it was funny.

I enjoyed the show for facilitating my brief fantasy that the open spaces in the west are as wild and free as depicted.
