Anyway to bypass chipped key ignition?

Hey guys I was smart enough to lose my key to my 2000 4runner limited and now all I have is a valet key. It opens the doors but doesn't start the engine. Is there anyway for me to bypass or remove the chipped key part so my key will start the truck? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Your hooped. You probably are gonna have to tow it into a dealer to have them program in a new transponder. Theres no "box" you can pull out and still have it start. That sucks!
 
Found a lock smith that claims they can program key. And only for 120 dollars! unless he doesn't know how to do his job, then I get to pay him more if it takes him longer. Must be my lucky day.
 
You shouldn't need to take your truck down, I think if you bring them your VIN they should be able to cut you one.

They will need the truck to program it. Best bet is to have it towed to the dealer and get yourself 2 keys made. Then throw one in the drawer next to your bed and you will always have a spare. I have had many customers lose their key and have to get towed in. Only to buy just 1 key and possibly be in the same situation again is a bonehead move.
 
So update. Lock smith came out and lucky requested payment before hand because he wanted 360 dollars! I said when I called I was quoted 120. "Oh the 120 is for the key its gonna be another 190 to program and its 50 charge for us driving out here. I said I would pay him for coming out but I won't pay him 50 bucks. First because guy in phone quoted me wrong and second because 50 is ridiculous a shop that is 3 miles from my house. I will be going to dealer tomorrow.
 
The PO of my truck had the chipped key deleted. Ask Toyota to install a non chipped key. The price will probably be cheaper and you won't need to worry about it again. Thieves wll assume it's chipped like every other 4runner.

I found this out last week when I went to get 2 new keys cut. When I held up my only key and it had no chip, he knew it had been done. It must have been a toyota dealer who replaced the tumblers because he also had the correct code to cut the key without using my key.

* Just a note regarding car theft. If you don't already know this, all a thief needs is your VIN number and a friend at the dealership to get a copy of your key made. Your VIN is right in the windshield for anyone who is interested enough to look. They may not be able to start the car without the chip but they can gain access without breaking a window. For women, they can let themselves in to wait and hide. On every car I own, I cover the windshield VIN plate. A simple piece of paper with black electrical tape will make the VIN disappear. I've had police look for the VIN and never ask for it to be uncovered. Its not against the law to cover it.

Maybe I gotta find someone who is willing to do that. Just called dealer and they said there is no way to disable the chipped part. They want 48 for the key and 198 to program it. Now I just have to get it towed there.

Do you have a Limited or SR5? I've never heard of this being done and I don't believe that it's possible.

And to add to the VIN cover....I always keep a photocopy of my reggie in the truck with my address blocked out. That way if I'm not home when something happens to the truck, I wont find anyone else there when I get back.

I have a 1999 SR5. If you want to look into it more, call the parts counter at Dan Wolf Toyota in Naperville, IL. They brought it to my attention and like I said, had the proper info to cut a new key based on my VIN.

Limiteds are the only runners with chipped keys, SR5's and base models didn't get them. This is my understanding at least. Granted this is all just **** I've read on the interwebs, but I don't think that guy at the dealer knew what he was talking about.
The keen eye also notices that your vin is etched on every window of your 4runner(this was a dealer option though I think, so yours may not but it was extremely common if not standard)

There are lots of 4Runners with no chips. Yours may have been born that way. My '99 SR5 has no chip and never did. I am original owner. I get copies for $4 apiece at the hardware store.

Lucky. Looking at the original brochure in the sticky says it was only standard on limited. Doesn't list it as option for base or Sr5 models but I'm sure if you had the money they would do it.
 
Tuscon-sorry about this most recent headache of yours. If I lived closer I'd pull your ass to the dealer old school with a tow strap and some hand signals--all I would charge you would be a cold beer, too. Got any buddies around that might be able to help ya out, so you don't have to deal with a tow truck and bill?
 
I don't guess you can hot wire these trucks very easily can you? I guess thats what your original post was probably asking wasn't it? I would think it would be possible, but probably a real pain in the ass with all these fancy electronics. ( I know pitifully little about this)
 
I didn't even ask anyone. I probably should of asked around yesterday but now I'm just gonna suck it up. Just want this dumb problem done with. Thanks though I probably would have taken you up on that.

Something like that. The dealer would make a key for 50 so if I could disable to chipped part id save 200 bucks.
