Anyway to bypass chipped key ignition?

yeah. I was thinking if you could at least get it bypassed temporarily (hot wire it) you could drive to the dealer and save the tow bill.

There she goes. Off to the dealer for some new keys. You can bet your ass I'm never losing my keys again.

I'll bet you won't see it on a tow truck again for a LONG, LONG time. Kinda funny that the ol runner is on a tow truck while mechanically in fantastic condition. Well, not that funny.
But ya see what I mean?

Yeah I felt bad having her up there. Dealer called today and I got really lucky because on late 90's early 00's (mine is 2000) you can't just program a new key in. You have to replace the entire computer which is about 1300 from what I heard. I did get lucky though, they will replace computer for free I just have to pay labor 100 bucks. Should be ready tomorrow. Total cost thus far: 85 dollars to replace house locks, 30 dollars to have Locksmith say he couldn't do it, 10 dollars for a one time key to unlock steering so it could be towed, 65 dollars for tow, 50 dollars for new key, 200 dollars to program, and 100 to install new computer. Total 540 dollars. Wish they had a student discount.

HOLY ****. Man I'm glad I don't have chipped keys. Well, I'm glad to see your getting it all taken care of and your not cussing every other word. I hate expensive lessons (as I go further into debt to further my education).

What's up with the "one time key to unlock the steering". Never heard of that?

Your telling me, I'm 50,000 deep and I still have 2 more years before I graduate. The one time key was mentioned to me by tow truck company. It's something that will allow you to turn the ignition to "on" and unlock the steering wheel so you can turn. It won't start the car and once you take the key out it will not do it again. Never heard of it before but sure glad it exist.
 
that's interesting. I might have to look into that more. Just curious how exactly it works, and if it can get the ignition that far-I wonder if it could start a non-chipped car.

One of those old locksmith tricks maybe, like "bump" keys.
 
Yeah I have no idea how it works. I needed my license and registration to get it and they made it off my vin number. I put it in the ignition and it worked to turn off the steering lock but not to start the car. Then once It was parked at the dealer I tried to put it in again and it didn't work.

What purpose would it serve? If you have a non-chip key, just take your proof of ownership to the dealer and get a real key....that's all they ask for, they don't need the truck. I had to do this for my daughter's idiot boyfriend's POS Toyota cheapo sedan. Boy, was he suffering....and I was a semi- good sport about it. It took about twenty minutes. At least she eventually dropped him.

I doubt they even build that capability into the non-chipped lock cylinders. I would like to know how it works, though...
 
Didn't have a reason. I'm a bored and curious person just searching for some knowledge. :) (also I didn't realize they still cut it off his vin, if it was universal in some way I think it could be useful-doesn't appear that way though)
 
Sorry to hear all this. Not that it would have helped you but they do make bypasses for the transponder.... of course to program it you need a working key, thus it wouldn't have helped you.

there is a post somewhere in here by singtoe giving the instructions to add a chipped key to your vehicle by a set of combinations see below. I myself have only one key and awaiting a spare from Ikeyless.com

(I know you lossed your key and these instructions need an original for this to work, but still wanted to re-post this info)





The limiteds have a secondary theft device or immobilizer. It does have a Transponder chip in the key head.

Below are the instructions I just used to successfully reprogram a freshly cut transponder key blank I purchased on e-bay on my 4Runner.


This method is supposed to work on 1998-2001 Models.

4Runner Key Programming
Add Duplicate Key

1.Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2.Insert master key into ignition
3.Within 15 seconds depress and release accelerator pedal 5 times.
4.Within 20 seconds depress and release the brake pedal 6 times and remove key.
5.Within 10 seconds insert new key into ignition.
6.Within 10 seconds depress and release the accelerator pedal 1 time.
7.After 80 seconds new key is registered and security light goes off.
8.Remove new key and depress and release brake pedal 1 time.
 
Yeah! That guy is a genius I actually bought a key knife that will be here tomorrow. If only I had lost my keys next weekend.... Thanks for the Instructions saves me from hunting them down.
