Boots were fine, the innards were shredded on the driver’s side and it was rumbling and grumbling.

I decided to replace both of them, the passenger side didn’t look that bad but since I had the whole truck apart…

Congrats! I'm at 215k now. I started changing my oil every 5k around 120k after I found the PCV and OCV screens with some sludge. Pretty sure it was caused by long idles in extreme heat but been doing 5k OCI ever since in case sludge was elsewhere. So far so good with a solid 19.3mpg.

This Is actually my second 4Runner. The first was a 2003 sport model that when I traded it on this one had hit 273,000 miles, and the only reason I got rid of it was the AC went up and was going to cost $3500 to fix. Both had/have the XREAS system and neither failed. And again, I know I am tempting fate to say that!

Ive read a number of posts that frame the situation like XREAS failure should be expected anywhere between 60K and 150K miles, that inevitable, expensive, and best to just rip and replace. I’m happy to hear thats not necessarily the case.
