Approximate cost to replace timing belt and water pump

Hey guys,

Got a 2002 SR5 4x4 with 110,000 on it. I've been putting off replacing the timing belt (and while I'm at it, the water pump) for about 10,000 miles. :P

Anyway, winter is coming and I figure I should just get this done finally.

I live in Minnesota, and my local mechanic (who I trust, sorta) says it's gonna cost about $800 (parts and labor) to replace the timing belt/water pump. Does this sound right? I'm sure a Toyota shop would be well over 1k, but I'm wondering if I can do better than this.

When I did mine recently in California I got quotes in the 500-750 range parts and labor. Went to a shop with better reputation and had it done for 600. Timing belt thermostat, water pump and radiator hoses
 
Parts for just the timing belt and water pump will be $150 or less, depending where you get them. I did the accessory belts as well while I was in there and that put the price closer to $200. There's a good bit of disassembling to do though, which keeps labor higher. $500 - $800 sounds right, mostly depending on where you go. Some mechanics can do it in a couple hours.
 
Spent around $150 in parts from Auto zone or some place and paid a mechanic $300 in labor. Seriously, buy the parts your self and find a mechanic who will do the work. Also ask him to give you back your old water pump; the shop that sells you the new pump will give you a $20 core refund for the old one.

I called the Toyota dealer last month, they want $860 to replace timing belt, belts and water pump. I found another reputable shop that will do the same for $550. I replaced my belt about 8 years ago, only have about 70k on it now, but Toyota recommends replacing it at 6 years/90k miles.

I spent between $500-$550, I had a friend who is a mech. do it on the side, so I saved on alot of labor costs. PLEASE...PLEASE use Toyota parts..you will pay more..maybe alot more but it is well worth it. I bought a water pump from local parts store and taking it out of box the pulley or bearing or whatever is in there was loose and making noises. Also I dont know if it is recomended you may want to change the belt tensioner, it was only like $40 dollars from dealer
Belt: $30-40
Tensioner: $40-45
Water Pump: $150
then all the other little things that go along with doing that service

My Toyota dealer did the timing belt for $380 total, and quoted another $280 to do the water pump and thermostat.
 
I had mine done by an independent Toyota shop in September and IIRC my total came to just over $800. Keep in mind that they often find other things that could use replacing when they do the T-belt and water pump. A few pulleys, etc. I also had them flush the radiator since I just bought the truck and know nothing about its maintenance history. Finally, I had a couple of sway bar bushings replaced as they were badly cracked.

Honestly, it was expensive and I could probably have done it for a lot less, but I subscribe to the adage of "buy the best and cry now" vs. "buy the cheapest and cry later." I plan on keeping this vehicle for at least 3-4 years (long enough to get an off-lease 5th gen, most likely) so I don't mind putting a bit of money into it now.
 
Its not hard at all, the only snag in the whole job is getting off your crankshaft. You might or might not need a special tool, but you should be able to rent it.
 
I changed the timing belt and waterpump on my '00 this summer, took a day and half to do. If your mechanically inclined and tools available, do it yourself, good learning experience. I recommend buying a Toyota waterpump, to me it look like an improved design over the original part. There's a few web sites that great instructions on the process, goggle it.....

Hey, I just got word from the oil change garage that the timing belt has never been changed. With over 220,000 on the 2002, it's time. An internet search turned up a Parts Geek listing with this:

"Notes: This kit contains a Mitsuboshi timing belt, an Aisin water pump w/ gaskets, a Koyo tensioner bearing, and a Koyo idler bearing. The water pump in this kit has a pipe at the thermostat housing for the factory engine oil cooler. For engines w/o factory oil cooler, use timing belt kit #TCK271 (w/o water pump) and order the correct water pump separately."

Sounds like original equipment Japanese parts.

Does anyone know where the "factory engine oil cooler" is located?

A toyota certified mobile mechanic has quoted $350 for the install.

Koyo only made one of the bearings, the other was NGK. (I forget which.) The oil cooler is on the driver's side of the engine near the filter. there is a hose leading back to it from the thermostat housing if you have it.

A lot of us have had good results (and prices) with the OE kits sold by aircabinman on e-Bay. Do a search on this forum with that name, and you will quickly find the MANY threads on here talking about timing parts. $350 sounds like it's in the range for an install. I did my own.

I would also do your thermostat and rad hoses at this time. At 220k, the hydraulic tensioner, too.

I'm going with an Aircabinman kit most likely. It seems to be the best deal and you get everything you could possibly need. I'm at 355k now and I'm pretty sure that no one has ever changed the tensioner or the pulleys.
 
I'm digging up this old thread. My daughter's 2000 is just about to hit 200K. The local shop is quoting me $1100. They will:

-Timing belt and water pump.
-Thermostat and coolant (flush)
-Cam & Crank seals.

This shop is a little high but they do good work. What do you think?

Next on the list Lower Ball Joints.
