Approximate cost to replace timing belt and water pump

I'm digging up this old thread. My daughter's 2000 is just about to hit 200K. The local shop is quoting me $1100. They will:

-Timing belt and water pump.
-Thermostat and coolant (flush)
-Cam & Crank seals.

This shop is a little high but they do good work. What do you think?

Next on the list Lower Ball Joints.

OEM parts? Still too much. With those miles, I would do the tensioner and idler bearing. The hydraulic tensioner too. All these parts can be found in some of the kits available on the web. Some of those kits come with a thermostat and drive belts. These are OE/OEM kits with the Mitsuboshi TB, Aisan WP and NGK or Koyo bearings and a OEM hydraulic tensioner. Also, some come with the cam and crankshaft seals. The kits range from $250 to $350. This is definitely the best way to go because if your were to go to a dealer and buy these parts they would be double the kit price. See if your mechanic will install these parts. Should be around $400-500 labor.

I recently purchased some 4Runners. Prior to that it has been years since I have owned a Toyota. While I was searching for 4Runners, I met a guy that has a lot of experience with Toyota's. His theory was that if it runs fine don't do anything except oil, filters and such. No harm will come to the motor if timing belt goes and it is unlikely. He sees vehicles hit half million without changing the belt.

Here in Canada, with me providing the AirCabinMan kit, my local import specialist mechanic quoted me between $600 (w/o cam/crank seals) and $750 (w/ cam/crank seals) CAD to do the job.

Exchange rates would equal $450 to $560 USD for you guys.

Yup. As mentioned above, I have the kit and my Timing Belt was last replaced about 120K miles or so (not sure if the Water Pump/Pullies were done though).

But hey, she still purrs like a kitten now, so I spent the money on LBJ/UBJ, ITRE/OTRE, and Front Brakes & Calipers instead.

I'll only bother with the TB/WP refresh if I have extra cash laying around or if one of those components craps out. Otherwise, I may end up selling the truck with the kit 4-5 years down the road. Who knows.

Really? Well, if you like getting stranded I guess that's the way to go. And if your WP goes and you overheat and warp your heads? Plenty of pictures on here of cracking, worn belts with 150K to say that you may be pushing it a little at that point. That coming from a guy who thinks the 90K factory recommended interval is too early but I certainly don't profess to know more than Toyota engineers. Not very sound advice if you ask me.

My goal is to minimize the chances my daughter breaks down on the side of the road.

I just called another shop, adding in tensioners, yikes $1400.

I purchased the timing belt kit from aircabinman on ebay just a few weeks ago for around $275. Here's the list of parts that comes with the kit (see below). It's a complete OEM kit, not just the typical timing belt/water pump & gasket/bearings kit. I noticed there were cheaper kits out there but I like the peace of mind knowing that the parts I received are all OEM. My mechanic charged me about $250-300 in labor. Total cost around $525 - 600 parts and labor.

2 1 Timing Belt & 1 label Toyota 13568-69095/YZZ03
1 Idler Roller NSK OE 13503-62040
1 Tensioner Roller Koyo OE 13505-62070
1 Front Crankshaft Seal Toyota/NOK OE 90311-40022
2 Front Camshaft Seals Toyota/NOK OE 90311-38051
1 Water Pump Aisin OE 16100-69398-83
1 Water Pump Gasket Aisin 16271-62011
1 Hydraulic Tensioner Toyota 13540-62021
1 Thermostat (82°c) Toyota 90916-03075
1 Thermostat Gasket Aisin 16325-62010
1 Air Conditioning Belt Toyota 99364-20870
1 Alternator Belt Toyota 90080-91090
1 Power Steering Belt Toyota 90080-91126

Well that is probably true. As far as getting stranded goes, I don't think anything can guarantee that you will never get stranded. Maybe with as old as these are nowadays there are plenty out there with rusted frames or whatever that can be had for cheap that have recent timing belt and water pump replaced. On a motor with 250k that was purchased used, I think I would roll the dice.

I am the new old man on the block and do not desire to ruffle feathers. I joined because I don't know it all. What I do know is all the 4Runners (5) in total that I recently purchased all of them have had recent timing belt and water pump. One had a new timing belt and water pump and shortly after guy had a bad head gasket or head. I have a roll over that timing belt was changed 6,000 miles ago. This is written in permanent marker right under the hood. That motor fires right up and sounds great. I will be pulling it and putting it in the non running 97. If there are any oil leaks I will put in new gaskets but other than that I am just dropping it in and hoping for the best.

I purchased these vehicles as inexpensive transportation. I think and hope that I will get many miles out of the ones I plan on putting on the road.

Find yourself another shop. I would also get a new OEM radiator cap as well that you can change yourself.

Also new OEM upper and lower radiator hoses would be good.

mechanics usually charge approx. 600. coolant, pump, seals, belt, drive belts, tensioner pulley, and tensioner.

you could save yourself some coin and buy a gates or Aisin kit. Gates used to distribute for Honda and Aisin does for Toyota either one is fine. In my 15 yrs of messing with cars Ive only ever had one problem with a bad gates pump.

The three 4Runners I bought all had Rad caps that fell apart.

I bought my two kits from the "timing belt kit company" was very happy.

If none of those bolts have been removed since your rig was built it can be a real bugger to get everything off to change the belt etc.......

Sounds like a good plan. And you've got parts trucks galore NICE!:biggrin1:

No feathers ruffled here either. Your mechanics advice is what I question. I just don't believe that a TB would last 500K on our trucks. I also don't believe that you just do the basic maintenance stuff and let the chips fall where they may. Prime example is the LBJs on theses trucks. You certainly would want to be proactive in replacement of these as your life may depend on it.

There was another thread talking about the Canadian price mark up on OEM parts. Your best bet is to source the parts you want replaced and order them yourself.

Ask them the total hours for the job and to quote you for that.

I had a friend's shop replace my front main seal, timing belt and water pump and it ran me less than half what they're asking. But I'm down here in California.

$780 with out pump. Make sure the shop will install your parts..some will.. with a parking lot warranty!!

Several 3.4l's with 200k + on original belt..but fleet trucks at that

In Februrary at 111k I paid $1,200 for Timing Belt, Water Pump, Idler Sub Assemblies, Coolant, Alternator Belt, Serpentine Belt, V-Belt, Seals at the stealership.

Did i overpay? yes, maybe, probably, but I'll take a bit of the piece of mind. Performing this work myself with a kit is way out of my wheelhouse.

What are LBJ's?

I have 41XXX on my 07 SE V6. Dealership just called, water pump is leaking. Will give me prices when I pick it up soon. Water pump leaking at this little mileage?? or not trust the dealership at all??

Count me in that fleet truck theory. 12yrs on same belt and water pump, going on 200k miles in that time span. No leaks that I know of and running fine in this Colorado thin air. I don't even plan to change it out until the tranny goes out and that may be never. I go up Eisenhower Tunnel often and tow my snowmobile to. This 02 sport just kicks ass.
