haha classic intro to the group. If you already have too many (looks like a ton) not a big deal to bow out.
If its figured out that i can roll, I'm also down to stay out somewhere saturday night.

[MENTION=60694]TheSentinel[/MENTION] With the size of the group, I'd like to suggest meeting off the 15/Cleghorn again at the dirt lot to the right of the off ramp. I understand the whole meeting at McDonalds to give everyone a last minute chance to get situated, but the dirt lot would allow people to air down as they get there instead of driving there as a group and then airing down.

As the roster grows, a simplified meeting spot makes more sense.

Either way I'll be airing down with one hand, and a egg mc muffin in the other hand. It's only one exit up the freeway. Probably 3 minutes between locations

Since we will be dividing into groups based off of difficulty anyway, I'd like to get a headcount on who plans on doing Cleghorns difficult side trails and 2N17X. This group would leave first at about 9:15am immediately following the safety briefing/comms check. I will need a HAM/CB capable designated trail leader to lead these guys.
I can lead the stock group through, we could leave 15 mins later. I should have a handheld HAM by the meet. This would also allow for any late members to still make it.
***Since this group is so large, I agree that the meeting point should be the Cleghorn/I-15 staging area*** - this will be updated on the first post. McDonalds would be okay for a smaller group, but 20+ trucks is really pushing it. Please plan on grabbing breakfast/fuel prior to and making it to the staging area by 9:00am.
This is looking like another epic trail run, I'm very much looking forward to seeing you all!

We did a Joshua Tree camp/run a few weeks ago. I miscalculated the miles and/or didn't regulate the group well enough, but we ended up with 15 rigs, aired down, doing a 15 mile drive to the dirt road at 30 mph. I actually tried to tell people NOT to air down, but everyone did anyway. It was quite the circus, but it was all good. My first time leading a group and I ****ed up. Everyone had a good time though on the coms.
I'm in for the off shoots and 2N17X, I might also have a capable Tacoma coming too. I have both HAM with an extended antenna, and a CB. I've done the main Cleghorn trail, but none of the off shoots, and I've never done Pilot Rock (2N17X or otherwise) so I wouldn't be good for a lead, but I'm good for coms and a tail for wherever you want me.
I might be a good mid group tail, because my radio is a 8 watt with a bigger antenna so I should be able to reach either the front or rear group. I know while we were camping in Joshua Tree last month, I was able to transmit 2-3 miles out across rocky/mountainous terrain from town, but I wasn't able to hear back from camp with the standard stubby antenna ham.

Having an external antenna is like night and day difference. You are essentially transmitting inside a faraday cage when inside your vehicle. Your transmission is basically bouncing around inside your cab, and it has a hard time getting out. 2m ham frequencies have a pretty good range when let out in the wild. When I was out in Death Valley with [MENTION=117408]Oneluv13T4R[/MENTION] and the tundra group, we were communicating about 40 miles away and it was crystal clear. I've also hit repeaters over 100 miles away.

Once I get licensed I'll have a mobile setup. I'm not out solo as much as I planned on being, but when I am I'd like the security of being able to use repeaters to get help if needed. I don't have an external for my current hand held, but it's an aftermarket longer antenna and it made a huge difference when we needed it to.

I have a couple extra externals you can try that I use on my Baofeng handheld and like you I also have a couple longer antennas I can attach to the handheld.

I say [MENTION=87168]Crazy[/MENTION]norweigan takes lead for the difficult trail group (sideshoots and 2N17x) since he has the most experience on these trails and knowing what to expect throughout the trails and the knows what lines and what it takes to make it safely through the difficult sections. [MENTION=123332]Drunner97[/MENTION] can do the mid and myself and [MENTION=128841]Spenny[/MENTION] could run tail.
Or [MENTION=60694]TheSentinel[/MENTION] I could run tail with you and Spenny could run tail for crazynorweigan with drunner97 in the mid.
We wouldn't really need a mid on the less difficult trails.
Your guys thoughts? If your all comfortable with that in those positions I say run with it.

I'd be happy to lead the cleghorn hard trails. I can't even count how many times I've done that trail. As for 2n17x I've done it once. I know how to navigate lines and spot people very well. But, I'm sure there are people who have been on that trail many more times than me who know it better. It's really not that hard of a trail, but like all trails in the area they are ever changing with new challenges. Either way I'm up for the adventure

I'll have my son too, he gets bored if I don't take the hard lines now, haha. i totally get where youre coming from though.
I'm good wherever I'm needed for com relay. I've never spotted though and while I can typically figure out the best line, I've never dealt with ruts as deep as what Cleghorn has.

It seems cleghorns offshoots offer way more challenges

3rd gen Tacoma and a Nissan both flipped in the past week in very likely the spot you're talking about. Both were solo and picked the wrong line.
