FJ sales in 06-07 were around 60K each of those years. Nose dived to around 30 K in 08. From then til 13 they only sold around 1K/month. Personally I think the 5th gen sales success was the reason for the FJ'S demise. Well at least a help lol.
 
Gas prices have everything to do with SUV and offroad oriented sales. Nothing unique going on at Toyota.

From a recent Forbs article.

During the month, Ford sales jumped 4% as the automaker sold 231,316 vehicles. The Ford Explorer was particularly popular, with sales surging 22%, while the F-Series surpassed 70,000 sales for the second month in a row. “We saw strong consumer demand in April, especially for pickups,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford’s vice president of U.S. marketing, sales and service.

Fiat Chrysler sales rose 6% to 199,631 vehicles, driven by double digit gains of the Jeep and Ram brands. “Consumer preference for SUVs and pickup trucks continued unabated in April,” said Reid Bigland, senior vice president of sales in North America, noting that this helped the automaker post its best April in over a decade.

i drove by the local mall today (my limited wanted to see its natural habitat) and within the half mile I noticed 6 5th gens. Not one was a limited!

Apparently I am still in the minority in feeling that the front end of my 11 is much better than the nose lift... :pout:

Here in San Diego you can't swing the proverbial dead cat without hitting a 4Runner, and a LOT them are 5th gen.

I have at least 20 FJ friends that switched to 5th Gen 4Runners because of the interior space, reduction of blind spots and 4 full doors. In 2013, pre-release, TRD brought the Black TRD PRO to Summit. We were drooling. Toyota knows their customers. I hated the front end but it grew on me.

They gave the FJ an option to solve all the issues they had with the FJ.
 
My concern is that these higher numbers might convince Toyota that the 4R needs to be more road civil, and possibly move away from things like body on frame or even solid rear, although I don't really see the latter happening, as there's the Highlander. Hopefully the increased numbers are a sign for Toyota that the current formula is working, don't change too much other than aesthetics.
