Arent those tow points? I thought the 4runner didn't have any rated recovery points (besides putting one in the trailer hitch)

First aftermarket bumper to actually reduce ground clearance and increase turning circle. There is so much room behind the grille on these trucks for a winch I just can't fathom why arb feels the need to hang one 12" out in front they way they do.

Because they have crush cans attached to the frame and are designed to work with airbags and vehicle crush zones.

It is a good thing. Ask me how I know that!

Airbag sensors are mounted to the frame, not the bumper. The topic of aftermarket bumpers and airbags has been beaten to death here over the years.
There is absolutely nothing that would preclude mounting the winch further back and reducing the front overhang, look at the behind the grille designs from southern style speed, pelfrybilt, budbuilt ect for reference. the crush zones built into the arb are not the reason for the addition front overhang since these aftermarket additions I mention above still manage to make use of the stock bumper - crush zones and all - and allow for a winch without the ungodly overhang.

I'm not sure that anything (aftermarket or otherwise) is "rated". It seems as you put a rating on something someone is trying to exceed it. I've used them (front hooks) several times on recoverys...maybe I'm just lucky though.

They seemed to work fine when I got winched out of this mud hole high centered.

...now back to the regularly scheduled prediction and critiquing without there being an actual product out yet thread. :playball:

The issue is not the location, it's the additional G forces from not having crush zones

ARB sells rated recovery points that bolt onto the frame. The ARB rep I spoke with felt that recovery points welded directly onto the bumper (of any manufacturer) could shear off during an off-angle kinetic recovery.

the crush zones may prevent the airbags from deploying in a low speed front end collision, that is all. arb hasn't released and info about what - if any - testing they've done on the subject, or said at up to what speed their bumper will prevent deployment. their marketing department has just come out with the claim that their bumper is airbag compatible, that is all, anything more is just speculation.
other bumpers will not prevent the airbags from going off should the crash produce sufficient g forces to trigger the sensors.

for me, the advantage of having a crumple zone built into the bumper isn't enough to overcome what I consider to be the horrendous appearance of the arb. If you feel otherwise, by all means, go right ahead and plunk down your dollars.

Those are tie down points and I've seen them shear when a truck is buried in mud. Recovery points should be inline with the frame.
