ARB bumper

Finally got around to installing my ARB bumper and PIAA 520 ion crystal lights. There was quite a bit less cutting of the frame than I thought I would have to do. It was a pretty easy job overall.

I didn't notice any extra rake, probably because I don't have a winch so the bumper only added about 50 pounds.
 
Gotcha. I doubt I would add a winch myself if I were to install the same bumper. I've been waiting for one to go up for sale locally at a good price, but no such luck. It would just be more comfortable to drive our back roads with that thing mounted up front.

I just saw that you have 881's up front so I'd probably follow in that direction since I doubt my '99 tall coils would hold the extra weight as well.

these bumpers dont really weigh that much, like 78lbs... if your worried that that extra weight will be too much stress, you should probably never drive with an adult passenger in the front seat... the ARB is one of the lightest and strongest(thanks to its design) bumpers out on the market.

Really?? The shipping quotes call them out at 250lbs for shipping?? I'm waiting for mine, and I will install a winch. I'm not over worried about the weight, but am curious, since you called it so low....

i installed mine by hand, by myself in my garage with no lift or hoist or no jack ect... just picked it up and slid it over the frame rails... i can take it off with a winch with 125' of steel cable and 4 lights, with another person. they are not heavy bumpers

There are some really clean hand-built front bumpers I like but there's something about the ARB and TJMs that just look classic. Nice choice.
 
Looks awesome! How did the install go? I plan on purchasing one but can't decide to do it my self or take it to a friends shop to be done.

The install was very easy. The hardest part was cutting the frame end caps off but that wasn't too bad once I had measured it many times. Overall it took about 4 hours including the two trips to Home Depot to get wiring supplies.

I agree, every time I consider other bumpers or even designing my own, the ARB bumpers and their Aboriginal voodoo bring me back. Maybe it's because the first time we saw a tough 4x4 as kids it had an ARB bumper. . . food for thought, oh and I'm no spring chicken.

That is why I bought mine. I love shrockworks and ODLs bumpers but when it comes down to it, the ARB is classic.

It's super easy. With a hacksaw and a drill you can install it in your garage. Only thing I needed anything more for was the endcap mod. And that's only if your doing heavy winching (some don't even do it then)

No you are probably thinking of the TJM bumpers. The ARB bumper is technically a Tacoma bumper, to install on a 4Runner you need to cut the mounting plates off the front of the 4Runner frame.

I miss my TJM. Sucks they quit selling them in the US.

Looks good though. Now you need to get a license plate to cover up the spot for the winch.
 
So you just cut the frame endcaps off and leave the boxes open? I thought it was best to weld the frame boxes closed?

There is an "end cap mod" where guys have welded a piece inside of the box ends to help strenthen the ends of the frame.

But the 'standard' install is to leave the box ends open. The ARB has brackets that slide onto and partially 'encapsulate' the ends of the frame, and then attaches to the factory bumper and tow mounts on the frame as well as a bolt that goes through the frame end from top to bottom. I personally think it's pretty stout that way. Unless you are doing heavy duty winching I think it's fine. For the occasional $hit i'm stuck I need to give myself a tug winching should be good.

IMHO if you are out there needing to winch yourself out all the time, either you are in the wrong vehicle, or you can't drive.
