Are all 5th gen roofrack crossbars the same?

I'd like to know as well. I did some searching and notices early 5th gen TE had plastic roof rack rails? Maybe somebody can shine some light on the topic?

Yakima SkyBox + OEM cross bars?
Any idea if a Yakima SkyBox will be compatible with the OEM cross bars? I have the box, and am wondering what type of cross bars to purchase. From pics I've seen online, it looks like the cross bars ride pretty low & close to the roof, and I'm not sure the chunky clamps on the SkyBox will pass through underneath. Not to mention if the SkyBox would sit on the shark fin antenna, or clear it. ???
(Have seen a pic of the Yakima on a 4Runner on this forum, but can't find the thread to PM the owner…)

Get aftermarket cross bars, the OE are so low I kept scratching my roof with stuff before the steel rack. My Thule box fit with OE crossbars but also hit the liftgate spoiler, mine isn't that big so only covers one side of the roof so no issues with shark fin.

Yes, it will work, but aftermarket is way better for all of the reasons [MENTION=91899]Jhalko[/MENTION] just gave you! Here is my setup, I personally liked the 53" Thule Aeroblades but the Yakima ones will work as well. Virtually no mpg difference and/or wind noise. Just take the OEM ones off as with both sets on it does create drag.
I personally like buying my stuff at REI for free returns and thier member coupons, but etrailer sells them too and will show the crossbars mounted to the 5th gen 4Runner.

They still work fine, the aftermarket are better. My 4Runner came with the OEM bars (I didn't "order it" with them so didn't pay) and I ended up selling them. I would try them out, see if they work for you as they are nice and low profile. If they don't then sell them here or on Craigslist. I had lots of offers for mine, but you'll likely get between $75 and $100 for them based of EBay prices.

If you had to cut a crossbar, either you were installing them wrong or you had the wrong parts.
I have a 2010-2013 trail rack on my truck, and the correct OEM crossbars for it fit fine.

In your opinion guys, would a roof rack (gobi/baja/prinsu) be better than this system? I plan on getting a RTT and awning in the future but am not sure if mounting the RTT to the gobi/baja/prinsu would be better than using the crossbars? Also if I dont have the RTT on top i can just throw bags and such on there instead of having a Skybox or something along those lines? I'm just trying to get a better understanding of which one would be more versatile. Thanks.

If it's for a RTT and awning, definitely a full length roof rack like the ones you mentioned. You can do it with cross bars but you are definitely flirting with the max static and dynamic loads of the OEM roof rails. If you just want to throw things up top get a Yakima load warrior or if you want lockable a cargo box.
I bought the truck used and came with it. Previous owner was using Thule crossbars and never installed it.
