Try it before you knock it, the halogen projectors take to the HID bulbs much better than I thought they would.
Are HIDs worth the trouble?

OP: just base your decision based on budget and tolerance for invasive work. It's not supposed to be a huge deal to open them up, but it does take some work. And you'll have to complete the work before you get back out driving after dark, unless you have a second set of lamps. But you can also achieve good results with the halogen projectors if you're willing to put in some elbow grease. The net difference is like $100...not a huge deal.
If you go that route... Just don't ever say you slapped in an HID kit, or you'll get a bunch of dicks talking down to you who took the time to retrofit. Based on my experience from this forum. Wowza.

My cutoff is quite sharp, just bend the squirrel finders a little at a time and evaluate. If you bend them back and forth too much they can work garden and break off. Nobody flashes me either and I go up dark mtn roads on a weekly basis. Maybe he is confusing projectors with reflectors, which do cast quite a bit of glare.

What color bulb are you running in the low beams?
Hard to capture on my phone. The yellow us subtle but noticeable.

Looks like 4300K to me, but I could be wrong...
4,300k HID for low beam
3,000k HID for fog lights
I incorrectly said my fog lights were 3500k on an earlier post.

I am aimed pretty low, and
there are so many many drivers in my area that have HID lights in REGULAR halogen lenses W/O any projector at all and

some with HIDs in hazy halogen lenses
.
and so many people with full high beams because they are not resourceful enough to sand and buff their halogen lenses
.

and it is usually these same people that opt for the 8000K (damm near purple)

and then the 20% of the population in my city that drive high end cars (MB, Audi, and that new Cadillac SUV really sucks too)

Then throw in the people driving with headlights OFF! Makes an old man not want to leave the house after dark

I did the Xtreme kit with Phillips bulbs on the low-beams.
For the fog lights, I went less expensive. I did the Volt kit with the standard bulbs that comes with it. It ended up being about half the price of the low-beams.

I can't remember the last time I've been flashed and I have HID kits in my 4Runner... But, I have an 07 (projectors) and as such have them aimed at the road and a pretty good cut off line.
I'd be much more worried about all the folks not aware their hi beams are on, as opposed to the occasional HID kit that may produce a tad extra glare.
However, HID's in standard housing (non projectors) really can cause glare...
