I have been using terry towels to dry my car and clean the interior (dash, instrument panels, etc.). Today I noticed that my instrument panel has light swirl marks, as well as the area around my volume knob on the stereo and the hood of the vehicle. I don't see how these swirl marks could've appeared. I'm gentle when it comes to using the terry towels. Now, I bought one set of them and have been using them over and over (I do wash them, though) for about 3 or 4 washes. Is this a bad idea?

Are they 100% cotton? Did you leave the hem on the edges on? If they aren't 100% cotton they may have fibers in them that do scratch. Also the hem on most towels is done with some kind of synthetic fiber that can also scratch.
I would buy a good (or a couple) microfiber cloth to clean the interior. They do an amazing job withuot using any cleanzers (sp?).

It think the era of the Terry Towel is over. Most towels are not 100% cotton. In fact if you take a lighter to the corner of your towel and you get black smoke then you don't have a 100% cotton towel. These towels will leave swirl marks on your paint and on your insterment panels as well.
I highly recommend making the switch to microfiber. It cleans a lot better than terry and will not leave any swirl marks. They are great for removing polish and wax and do a great job on widows and insterment panels.
With all of that said I still use terry towels for wiping down any surface that I put rubber/vinyl dressing on, cleaning wheels and door jambs, and scrubbing out spots on the carpet.
