Are the 3rd gen bumpers interchangeable?

Well, today's starting off kinda crappy. Going just a hair too fast on my way to work and flipped the girl off the road, over an embankment, and onto her side. No broken glass, no airbags, brunt of the damage was the 2 front quarter panels and the bumper. So, that's where the question come in. If I were to get a bumper from the first half of the 3rd gen, would it fit on my 99? Or do I need to get the newer bumper to have it mount up?

You'll need a '99 or newer bumper. The '96 to '98 bumpers had different mounts.

I'm up in the top of the state, so SC's a little bit of a drive. I checked the pick n pull website for inventory and only saw 96-98's. Gonna have to decide whether I want to do a stock bumper or spend a little extra and get a plate at this point I guess!

I think the answer you're looking for is "Yes".

You will need bumper, mounts, valance, reinforcement, etc - but it's all available and will fit.

Lots of build threads have the conversion from 99+ to 96-98 style bumpers.


If you can' find at a junkyard, post a WTB then look up your nearest CertiFit.

Not true, 99 or newer 4runner still have the old 96-98 mounts, toyota just decide not to use it.


To OP: imo the 99+ bumper is stronger but not by much so might as well save up some money for a heavier duty bumper or just get a cheap older bumper and paint it, too bad i tossed away my old bumper.

If you decide to use the 96-98 bumper, you'll need to remove the bumper reinforcement bar located at the end of the ladder frame. You'll also need new signal lights. Also, the supports at the each side are different.

if i were you, i'd get the 99+ bumpers for safety and ease in replacement. the bumper reinforcement was added by toyota for a reason
