Are there any other grease fittings on 4th gen

On the 4th gen. -besides the propellor shaft- are there any other easily accessible grease fittings I can maintain now that I bought a new grease gun?

I just greased by 2004 V6 4X4. I only found 2 points on the rear shaft and 2 on the front shaft. The FSM should more on the rear and no pic for the front. Anybody else have an 04? If so how many grease points?

There is one zerk for each u-joint and one for each slip yoke. That makes 6 total.
I have yet to investigate if there is anything up front on the control arms or spindles. Anyone else know of any others?

Search "07 V8 4x4 Zerk Fitting Pics" in Maintence, it has a picture of each zerk fitting. It greatly helped me.

The 6 or at least mine must be different. I had the diagram from the FSM that should all the fittings. I could not find them. On the rear shaft there is one in the middle of the u joint closest to the center and one the shaft where it slips. I don't remember where they were on the front. I had the 4 Runner up on jacks. I looked and felt all around and could only find two on the rear and two in front.

For the rear shaft, look for the fitting on the u joint closest to the rear diff. Front shaft is almost identical to rear shaft, just mirror images. If you can find all three rear zerks, you should be able to find all three front ones too.

The FSM for the 4th gen shows it with a double cardan joint, which the 4th doesn't have. On the 4WD 4Runners there are six zerks total. Three on each drive shaft: two U-joints and one slip yoke.

If you still can't fine them on either side of the u-joint it is possible that you have u-joints without zerks. Though rare, I have heard of this. Do you know if they were replaced at one time?

That is what I was thinking. I bought the 4Runner used from the same dealership it was sold from. I got the service records. The people who bought it original were fanatical about doing all the scheduled maintenance at that dealership. There is a record of everything and nothing missed. If the U joints we replaced they for whatever reason they went somewhere else. Either that or the fitting broke off, but not likely because there is no evidence of this.

I will check again but the fitting I found I found easily and were where expected. I have always done most of my own maintenance, esp stuff this simple. I suppose I could have overlooked it but I shoved my figure in between all the prongs of the U joints in an effort to find all the fittings I could.

2WD 4Runners and Tacomas don't have zerks on the driveshaft.

I suppose I could have overlooked it but I shoved my figure in between all the prongs of the U joints in an effort to find all the fittings I could.

I'm new to this site. So I now understand that my 4th Gen 4RNR has grease fittings. To my knowledge, they have never been greased. I have 3 questions:

1. Would this explain the wining sound that I hear when I'm pressing the accelerator while on the freeway? The sound lets off when I take my foot off the gas.

2. I'm hearing the clunks that everyone is talking about. Greasing might solve this right?

2. Greasing these fittings will be my weekend job. Is there any particular grease that I should use? How much would a grease gun cost including the grease?

1. Not sure about the whining but it could help. It could be something in the belt system but it’s worth a shot.

2. Yes, this should help out with the clunks.

I bought a cheap grease gun https://www.amazon.com/GreaseTek-Premium-Pistol-Grease-Extension/dp/B019P1MRKU and Mobil Synthetic Grease https://www.amazon.com/Mobil-105527-Automotive-Accessories/dp/B000LDJ3XQ that I got at Advance Auto with a coupon. I paid under $25 for both. I plan on using these for the zerks when I put my lift on in a couple weeks. The shop greased it last time. You could use a moly grease for some of the joints but from what I’ve read you’d be fine with just this for everything.

Check your transfer case and differential fluid levels while you're at it.
