Are There Performance Upgrades?

So i recently bought a 86 T4R and i love it but its a little gutless, haven't checked compression but by feel the enging seems to be running well and strong, just some power/torque lost somewhere

So my question to yall is , what are my options , im not working in a budget as much as i prefer to spend as little as possible doing work myself is possible but i have no tools

the engine is the 22re i think , it is not turbo'ed, i know cams and turbos would help a lot, and i was wondering what else, i do not have the space to do a lot of work so im looking for small upgrades , working towards bigger ones

All kidding aside, these are great, ultra-reliable engines that respond to the usual tricks. On mine I have a K&N filter, a high-flow cat, and a very free flowing exhaust system. I'm running iridium plugs, Toyota wires, cap n rotor, and 10w40 full syn oil. Short of a turbo or supercharger, ur never gonna get huge power outta these motors.

would anyone suggest turbo over supercharger as a final upgrade, are their after market ignition systems

and im not sure but i dont think i have a cat on it, sounds to loud and free flowing, almost to free flowing, no pressure . . .idk been along time since i had a vehicle wanted to work on

There was a factory turbo set-up in 86 & 87 I believe, I'm sure someone makes an aftermarket turbo for these. As for a sprchrgr, I don't know of one for the 22re. Either way would be VERY expensive. As for ignition/wire upgrades, ur not gonna see a power bump for ur money. Stick with genuine Toyota parts.
 
LCE has a supercharger for the 22RE. It might be worth the investment in a little Celica, but not in a truck twice the weight.

Make sure your 22RE is running well. Make sure you have correct gears for your tire size. If you're just looking to squeeze a little more out, consider a performance cam - I just drove a stock 22RE truck yesterday, and the difference between that motor and the one in my truck with a 261 cam was noticeable. Intake mods help a little, they'll help more if you can find a header in the classifieds, but I wouldn't pay to buy one new.

If you think you need more than just a little bit, I'd look into a motor swap or a new truck. I'm getting ready to do mods to my 22RE that would run about $1500 if I was buying all the parts new, and I'm hoping for maybe 150 hp when I'm done. So that's what you're looking at - thousands of dollars for tens of horsepower. Your call.

Dude u gotta do a little search before posting such a vague question. There are literally thousands of threads discussing this exact topic....
 
If you really want some power in it swap in a s/c 3.4. There is no point in trying to make the 22r/e platform something it is not. Just my $.02.

Agreed. Instead of hopping a hamster up on steroids, transplant a jackrabbit in there. For the price you pay for a turbo or supercharger you could have a 5VZ or 3RZ. Having played with 22RTE motors there is never enough you can do to squeeze more out of them, none of it is cheap and very little of it is satisfying.

The only place in the county I would even consider sending my junk to is Rising Sun in Bellingham. They are just a typical japanese shop, but they do good work from what I gather.

worst thing about buying a vehicle car from someone who hasnt done the work themselves is , i dont know what the heck has been done, or how stock or modified it is . . . . .but she runs great so no complaints here

shes been rebuilt i know that just, the new looking block and bottom end with a brand new radiator , i wonder what else is a after marker item, giv eme one sec and ill be back with a pic


a bit dirty and not in 100% shape but she runs great

Since my 22re had 224k miles on it when I bought it, it was gutless as well. A new, larger exhaust pipe and freeflowing cat & muffler really helped a lot. Also, since a cam swap is much easier on a 4 cyl I'd suggest a cam too. I got the crawler cam from lo range offroad.com and it made a difference-though not as great in comparison to the exhaust upgrade (I still haven't done anything to the intake just cleaned the crrrap outa it!) Once you get used to it you'll love the 22re. I know I do..
