Are “Toyota” reman cv axles different from the original?

The shop was done with my rig today and one of the things they also replaced was the front diff seal that the cv axle goes in. This seal never leaked till they install the new axle back in February and caught it leaking the first time when I notice the cv axle was leaking. Well when I got my rig home today, I got down underneath and sure shit its leaking diff fluid again, but even worse! So I got right back in my rig and drove down there before they closed to tell them its leaking again. I was told they're going to look at it first thing tomorrow morning.

I really hope they didn't mess something up inside the diff besides the seal. But I did do some research on here about that seal and apparently it can be finicky even with a reman axle.

Good news! It looks like the shop put a Toyota reman cv axle on and so far no leaks from the diff. Here’s some photos of the new one. I also added a photo of the driver side cv axle that’s original.

Edit: never mind the diff fluid is still leaking from the cv axle. Bringing it back Monday...

Hmm... pretty sure the metal inner and outer joints is painted on oems.
I could be wrong.

Apparently Endlessblockades cv axles are silver as well. Waiting for him to chime in or post a photo. I’ll tell you this, it’s definitely more heavy duty looking compared to the last one they put on there and matches the original.

Now I’m more concerned about this seal that keeps leaking diff fluid where the cv axle goes in. This is going to be my 3rd time going back for them to fix this leak. It never leaked till they put the first cv axle in.

Granted these are new examples. They came with a sticker on the shafts. And those cv boot clamps, that's how I remember how to spot an oem axle.
Maybe times have changed and Toyota's re-manufacturer doesn't make them like that anymore because of the lesser demand for them?

You could also reach out to someone like CVJ and ask how to tell if they're OEM or not. I'm sure theres a method to it and that they probably receive many axles people assumed to be original but were not

I don't know if these will help. This axle's over a year old but a more recent one I have looks identical. The axle has some surface rust or dirt - but you can see the slapped-on silver sticker and the inner boot. Sorry for the wait for such crappy pics. I'm attaching a transfer case skid tomorrow if some better pics would help. Bottom line is I don't know if these are legit or not - only had these 2 done....

i recently installed OE reman rear calipers on my 2007 4runner. i asked at the parts counter about quality and who did the reman. was told, at least for the calipers, that toyota does it in house.

Although I can pretty much guarantee that OEM remanufactured parts are much higher quality than most aftermarket remans, I can also pretty much guarantee that they do not do the remanufacturing themselves. Toyota uses a long list of trusted outside manufacturers to do this kind of work. The Parts guy was blowing smoke up your skirt to make you feel better.

So if Toyota doesn't do the work and outside manufacturers do, then why don't other remanufactured parts - also made by outside manufacturers - have the same high level of quality? Good question. The answer is that Toyota holds their suppliers to much higher standards.

that's what i was told. came in a toyota box. you should call several dealership parts depts. and inquire. i would like to know what they tell you.

While it is true that Toyota OEM parts come in a Toyota box, that doesn't mean Toyota manufactured them. As I said in my previous post, Toyota uses a number of trusted suppliers to make their parts. They have a financial interest in many of them. The same is true for all automotive manufacturers.

ok, when we say our 4runner was made by Toyota, that's what we mean to say, even though little is actually "manufactured" by Toyota. so the remans are done under the guidance of Toyota, to me that is the same thing, they are "Toyota" parts.

Black painted inner joint (don't see the outer joint), crimp style cv boot clamps and a sticker on the shaft.
That's how i remembered Toyota made a shaft.

Could it be times have changed on the Toyota reman process requirements? Unpainted joints, fold over lock style boot clamps and no Toyota sticker on shaft.

Yep someone said the inner joint was painted and I wanted to show that. This one is less than 6 months old. I didn't even notice the QR code til I wiped the dust off it. If it's unpainted and totally generic and sold as an OEM re-man, I'd find it a little sus....

Well the shaft looks like an OEM on yours and is clearly showing it’s a Toyota oem axle. I can honestly say, I don’t know for sure that mine is a OEM reman. All I know is the ones the mechanic put on are definitely closer to size then the previous ones they put on there and clearly look smaller and aftermarket.

My driver side cv axle is starting to leak and I’m guessing in the next 2-4 years I’ll be replacing it myself and will be buying a reman from the dealer. I will report back then to show Toyotas current status on reman cv axles!
