area51's '99 T4R Daily Driver (Updated pics 7/24)

So I've lurking around here for a few months and finally found some time to start my build thread. Also found some time yesterday to snap some pictures.

For the past three years I have been driving a '96 Pathfinder and I felt that it was time to let it go. I enjoyed it but mt real dream SUV was a 4Runner, specifically a 3rd Gen. Shopped around and must've looked at a dozen of them when I came across the one I have now. It had 150k miles, t-belt/wp replaced at 90k, wet okole seat covers, paint was in good condition, engine compartment clean, a slight oil leak from vc, ceramic tint and overall looked to be well taken cared of. The guy had receipts to show alignment and replaced shocks. This was the best one and I was ready. Once I took possession, the first thing was to replace the t-belt and wp that way I had peace of mind. It had the usual fuel gauge issue but I wasn't worried.

So the plans for this truck is what I had the Pathfinder for, to be comfortable listening to my music while in it and to compete in SPL contests when the meets happen. Path did a 151 with two 10s so I'm looking to increase that to 154ish with two 12s. I'll show the install as I get there but for now need to take care of the basics. Pics:

Alright, alright, alright. Don't hate on me because it's a 2WD. I don't have a need for a 4WD here, so I figure 2WD would be less cost on fuel, repairs and overall maintenance.

Quick update from the weekend. I found some time to lay more fiberglass down on the base to stiffen it up. Got the rings cut out and shaped the base. Installed my Hybrid Audio L6 into the doors and cut the door panels to fit them. The window track made it a pita which is why for such a tall spacer and door pods.

Interesting concept on the door pods. I might try again. This is what I came up with trying to fit a cdt classic 3 way set in the doors.

I made a folly in not measuring the door gap on both sides so it fit on the drivers side but didn't on the passenger. I should try again but it's kind of a summertime project.

Thanks for the comps. Your pods, are they for a 6.5" and a 4"? Interesting design. Mine will be a two way active. However the 3" mids are actually super mids from Audible Physics that are meant to go into the upper range while staying low.

My pods are more of a cover to cover the hole. The pods will be bolted to the panels while the speakers are mounted to the door.

The 4Runner's a great platform for bass, the only problem area I ever ran into for flex was the rear quarters, I never did anything to combat it though, I loved the sound of the panels unloading when the bass stopped lol.

Time for an update to this thread. Still didn't finish the speaker covers for the doors but I did get to get the sub area in the back pretty much done. I still need to complete the wiring to make it look a lot better than what it is. Installed my AQ20 along with my two Zuki amps. Got the wires ran from front to back with an extra XS battery and a six-pack of Maxwell caps. Audio is ran through a Audison Bit One. All wire are Knukoncepts wires. Subs are two HDC4-12s. With this setup, I got my clarity up front and bass in the back when I want it. I am able to compete at SPL contest yet cruise back home. Truck is deadened with Knukoncepts Kolossus Edition everywhere.

And I also got this done while I was in the upgrading mood....

Replaced the tires on my newly acquired Sport Edition rims. And I gave the rims a fresh coat of Dupli color rim silver paint.

So the sport edition rims are 16" with a 265/70R16 and the originals were a 15" with a 235/75R15. Does anyone know around how much difference in speedometer readings it will be? Such as if my speedo says 55 mph will it be actually 60 mph? One thing I've noticed is I'll probably lose my gas mileage a bit because of the taller tire (it feels like it) and braking is a little harder.

if you go to the Play Store there is a speedometer app that is free thats awesome..I have it on my phone to check Speedos on cars that come into the shop. Its GPS driven and very accurate.

I totally agree. I added washers to mine and moved the track about an 3/16" away from the door. Didn't hurt the window. I still need to get my lazy butt to finish the pods. :redbrick:

Time for an update:

Installed a Speedohealer v4 to compensate for the bigger rim and tire. Works like a charm! Now the speedometer reads correctly which means the odometer reads correctly which means the fuel gauge can be tracked to mileage. I was worried about the fuel gauge the most. Had a hard time guessing the mileage on a full tank.

The fuel gauge miraculously fixed itself. I got the truck with a bad fuel gauge but ever since I took the cluster out to change to led bulbs the fuel gauge has been working fine.

Got the Firestone air bags installed to help with the weight of the box, amps and extra battery.

Did the big three to the electrical charging system.

Installed a Diehard Platinum battery upfront with a XS battery in the rear.

Since I was off for the past three days I decided to make use of the time and do whatever I could to the 4Runner. Number one on the agenda was to fix the leaking valve cover gaskets. It started like the pics show:

Pic before starting

Intake tube and filter assembly removed

Throttle body removed

Upper intake and valve covers removed

Reverse the order and viola!

Also did the deckplate mod

And installed back in the engine compartment (don't know what is wrong with pic but photobucket does not want to cooperate in editing)

Other than that I replaced the rear shoes and had the drums turned, still gotta adjust them a little more.

The interior stuff is mainly the speaker pods that I am build for my Audible Physics AR3as. Here is how they are going:

These will be mounted on the a pillars just above the dash.

Did you ever meter the HDC4's? I wish I would've had a chance to meter my runner with the ZCON 18 on 3.5K, just to see what kind of numbers it could put up.

Haven't metered them yet but plan to in the near future (got my own Termlab). I gotta find my peak frequency for this truck still yet. I probably start off running them at 2 ohms first. Do you have an idea of what peak freq I can start with?

With my XFL 12's tuned at 33, they peaked in the low-mid 40's on my ear-meter, that was sub up, port back though so it may be a little different firing at the hatch.

Thanks for the info. I'll start high I guess around 45hz and see what I'll get. 45hz was my previous truck's peak freq and everything I have is setup for it, maybe I'll get lucky!
