Arkansas to Utah via the Trans America Trail

When (if) you go to Waterton, go through the Chief Mountain border crossing inside GNP. Try to get to it during the day -- it's an awesome little stop. Then cross back through the Port of Piegan (it closes at 11pm local time every day, so don't miss it). I used to work out of Piegan when I was with the feds, and also got to work at Chief Mountain and Goat Haunt.

If you've never done Going-to-the-Sun Road before, you might want to fold in your driver's side exterior mirror.

And yes, the road opened last week. There will still be a lot of snow at higher elevations so photo opportunities will be a-plenty.

A tourist day with the family in Colorado Springs. We drove up Pikes Peak to see a little snow and spend some time looking at the planet from above.

Tomorrow I am driving Mosquito Pass and then Saturday I head to Moab via the TAT.

Friday, June 24, Fairplay, CO to Leadville, CO

A day trip out of Colorado Springs to Fairplay, CO. A beautiful drive to Fairplay was not ruined when I discovered that, as stated online, Mosquito Pass was still closed due to snow. Looking at the mountains coming into Fairplay made it obvious there was still snow. I had a backup plan though...Weston Pass was open. Though not as difficult, it was a fun trip through the Pike and San Isabel National Forests.

We arrived in Leadville, CO in time to enjoy their BBQ Contest. Being from the Memphis, TN area, I know a thing or two about BBQ and had the chance to "judge" several plates :banana:

I'd never heard of Leadville, and your picture looked awesome. So I Street Viewed it on Google Maps and found your exact location. Appears to be Old City, USA. I love it!

Roosville POE: 24hrs (daily) -- north of Eureka/Whitefish MT

Chief Mountain POE: 7am - 10pm (daily) Mountain Time

Piegan POE: 7am-11pm (daily) Mountain Time

Sweetgrass POE: 24hrs (daily) -- Interstate 15 @ Canadian Border

Sorry for the link only. The video is the beginning of the Gemini Bridges road in Moab. The ascent in my 4runner was awesome.

Also, winching your 4runner out of sand is tough when there are no trees. Remembering that you didn't deflate your tires after the fact is tougher.
