Is there a way to easily remove the ashtray to get at the bulb without removing the center console on a 1997?

Is there a way to easily remove the ashtray to get at the bulb without removing the center console on a 1997?

I think you have to get at it from the back, but it's really easy to pull it - should take less than a minute to get to it.

You can remove the ashtray and then unscrew the two brass screws that hold the mount to the console. They are about an inch and a half back and three inches apart going up into the ceiling, so to speak, of the ashtray compartment.The bulb socket is part of the mount. I just don't know how much wire slack you will have if you do it that way.

I know because I just removed my ashtray in my NO Smoking 4Runner to make the hole into a storage cubby.

Two screws and the whole thing comes out. i removed mine to mount the scanguage. Should take 2 minutes. Make sure you use a good screwdriver.
