Hey guys. at the dealer doing my 30K service.

They are telling me I need to get the fuel injection / throttle body cleaned - $260.

Changing the Cabin air filter for $70.

Thoughts? Is that usually done at 30 K?

Please advice, quickly :P

Thanks guys! I declined both for now. When, if ever should I do the fuel injection cleaning?

I will look through the manual for where to replace cabin filter. Guy said its behind the dash. Sounded complicated.

Open your glove box, see another small panel that can be removed and open that. Change filter. Reverse process.

I've never paid for a fuel injector cleaning from the dealer on any Toyota I've owned. I use fuel injector cleaner about every 10-15k and I've never had problems. Let Ducmonsta tell you what the recommended interval for an actual cleaning might be.

Oh dear God that is hilariously sad. I can't believe dealerships seriously charge that. $70 for a freaking cabin air filter change?!? It's a $30 part (at the maximum since it can be had online for anywhere from $18 to $25).

Of all the vehicles I've owned, this 4R is the easiest when it comes to actually replacing the filter.

1. Open glovebox
2. Depress two tabs to pop out panel
3. Replace filter
4. Reinsert panel
5. Close glovebox

The above process takes all of 30 seconds. (Maybe 60 seconds if it's your first time).

It is behind the dash. But what he failed to mention was that there is an access panel in the glove box as both Jaker and Dave mentioned.

The filter costs $15 at any auto parts store and that's for the more expensive one with carbon in it. Changing filters takes no more than 2.72 seconds. :-)

This is WHY I have been to a Toyota dealership twice in a decade. Do the maintenance (if you can) on your own. Ensure that it is done correctly, and save some dollars for mods etc. I simply do not understand why ANY dealership would charge $70 for such a simple task.

I can count on zero fingers how many times I have been satisfied with any Toyota dealer service department, for any reason, until today.

I drove a couple hundred miles to pickup my disabled T4R, only to find it barely able to limp down the road (sideways). With the body shop closed, and every other dealer service department closing at noon, at the end of my list (from my phone by distance), I contacted a Toyota dealer in Alcoa, TN, that could squeeze in an alignment and balance.

There was a cool guy that worked at the body shop's dealership, that mentioned he was a member here, and 5th gen owner, which will prevent me from publicly calling out this body shop.

Even with my LCA bent and needing replacement, Randy changed my alignment from ****ing scary, to better than stock, even though he had to make some major sacrifices to the bent parts. They also balanced my wheel that the body shop didn't bother to stick any weights on to, and my ride home was smooth sailing (except for VSC*).

*"Body shop" replaced my wheel and tire, after I told the adjuster not to, because I already had a spare of both, and a replacement that would cover the loss, but I guess they like to waste money. So they replaced the C range Duratrac with an E range, which, I have found, when taking a tight right hand turn, the extra weight causes VDC to go berserk and ABS the front left wheel into a massive under steer. :wtf:

....and the sage continues, so sorry you have to go through all this

Thanks for all that took the time to post, Saved me about $400 from the stealership. I take my truck there for oil change and major service so they have it on paper in case anything ever goes out while under warranty.
But when he hit me with that much money it sounded too true to be good ;).

What is one of the top brands for cabin air filter? And I did look in the glove box, looks super simple.

@ Gamerc, yes he did make it sound complicated and "behind the dash". I'm betting he just regurgitated what the tech told him and he actually has no idea where it is.

Love this forum! Too bad I can never treat any of you to a beer.

Edit: Went over to Costco and bought a case of the fuel injection solution and put one in right before I filled up. Once every 10K.

This is another myth CREATED by stealerships. You do NOT have to have your maintenance conducted, then documented by the stealership. All you would need (if there was a problem) is a receipt. I learned this when I worked at a dealership in the 70's. You go to Autozone and buy a case of synthetic Mobil One, and the appropriate oil filter. That receipt is now your proof of an oil change. On that receipt, mark the date/time/mileage of your 4Runner. Keep all in a handy folder!

I posted this in other threads, but I think it bears repeating- I go to the hardware store and but a large 1" thick 3M Filtrete HVAC filter for about $15. I cut a piece to the proper size, line the edges with electrical tape, and replace the old cabin air filter with that, paying attention to orient it properly for airflow. I haven't done my 5th gen yet, but the 3M filter is of way higher quality than the one in my 4th gen and my wife's Lexus. And a fraction of the price, since I can cut several cabin filters out of one HVAC filter. I just keep the extra on a shelf in my basement with the other car stuff.

Wow, really sounds like a scam. That's why I do all my own maintenance and would never take my vehicle to the dealer or a shop.
You shouldn't need to get the fuel injectors cleaned unless they get clogged with deposits from some bad gas or something and the engine is missing and running rough. If they do need cleaning Seafoam will generally take care of the problem unless they are too badly clogged. Then, if you are handy, you might need to take the injectors out and clean them. They can be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner like you use for jewelry. I had to do that for my friend's Nissan Maxima once.
