AT Tires

I mounted stock size Cooper AT3s on some 6 Shooters yesterday. I am experiencing the shakes at 80 km/hr. I was wondering if someone could give me some insights before I go back to the dealership. The tech who mounted the tires also has FN Wheels that's why I chose them. I bought the tires through a third party, so I'm kind worried about the warranty hassles.

Your ride looks great!
If the dealership cant get it right, look for someone who has a Road Force Balance Machine. They place a roller to simulate road force and then they spin the wheel and tire. I have always had my best luck with this type of balance system. Normally if the tire is defective from the factory, this machine will tell you the tire can't be balanced for a smooth ride.

Thanks! I believe the dealership has a machine. My theory is that tires need to broken in a bit more. The ride today wasn't as bad. I'm bringing it back in this Friday just to be sure.

Last spring I put 265/70/17C AT3's on Six Shooters and they ride nice and smooth up to 85 mph or so. I did read before I got them that they do take a lot of weight to balance and can be a little tricky, so I had them road force balanced when they were mounted.

I have approx 60,000 miles on my AT3's and they have served me well. They are definitely ending their life cycle and I plan on replacing them with the new BFG KO2 that are being released in November. I am switching because I do need new tires soon, but also because I was always a fan of the KO's and want to check out the new KO2.
For what it's worth, the AT3 tire has gotten me through heavy show, icy snow, heavy rain, slick oily rain, mud, dirt, deep grass and of course the highway - without a single hiccup! They were absolutely great IMO.

New set of stock AT3 shoes
Just replaced my factory Dueler H/T shoes with about 5k on them with some new AT3's in stock 265/70/17 P-Rated and I can already tell a difference in their ability. Ride is just as quiet and comfortable as before, feels more secure and attached to the road, more responsive, less squishy feel and way better in the rain. I haven't had any vibration issues as of yet.
I had my local Discount Tire order them from DT Direct and then sold the Duelers on Craigslist. I have the blackside out and for me that works best. My 4R is my DD and at about 100 miles a day, but I wanted to still have a tire that I could easily take off road whenever the opportunity presents itself.
I'll let ya know how they continue to play out but I am fairly optimistic at the moment and would recommend to anyone on the fence about these tires. Even for stock size the look more stout on the truck.

How much did you get for the stock tires? If I could get $200 for 4 of them (under 1000 miles) I'd do it in a heartbeat.

[MENTION=108954]forwheeler[/MENTION], I listed them for $400 and ended up getting $330. I could have held out for a bit more but I wanted to clear them out of the garage asap. Got my new AT3s for $146 each and a $70 mail-in rebate. My Duelers has 5k on them and 10/32" tread remaining.

Ditched the 20s for a set of 275/65/18 Cooper M/S. So far, a 100 miles later, I am liking the better ride and stability over the Yokohamas now for the leveling to take care of a very slight occasional rub.

So an update on my Cooper ATs and the Six Shooters. I went back to the dealership a number of times to balance the combo. They tried removing the caps and installing the hub rings. Finally they brought it next door to their sister dealership that had a Road Force Machine and the problem was solved. I don't know why they didn't do that in the first place.
Otherwise, I'm happy the tires and wheels so far. Wet traction is good for all the west coast rain we got this past week. Gas consumption did go up a bit, but not as bad as my REVOS.

Hi...based on your very helpful fitment guide, the 20" LE wheels should be able to run 275/55/20s. Just like you, I really like the Cooper Discoverers and my local Discount Tire stores have plenty of them in stock in that specific size. I paid them a visit and they said that the LE's narrow wheel would not be able to handle a 275 tire. They said that my only options with the LE wheel was to stay with the 245/60/20 stock size. I don't know if he was just trying to sell me a set of wheels in addition to the tires, but I ended up leaving and not buying anything. I love the LE overall, but I want to get rid of the 245 narrow tires. Is my only option to change my wheels as well? Or just go to a different store? =)

There is a liability those guys (and everyone) has to adhere to in order to do business. If a tire manufacturer specifies a rim width for a particular tire and a tire shop ignores that recommendation, who is in trouble? Tire shop. If you choose to put a wider tire than recommended on your vehicle and you do the work yourself then you are responsible for anything happening yourself. I did the Fitment Guide and I put a bunch of disclaimers at the bottom. Why? Because some people only see what they want to see and once they find confirmation they ignore everything else, like warnings and stuff. The Guide is based on owner's experiences here, plus technical and commercial websites. Thanks...I had read that whole thread before and noticed members running the 275s on the 20s. Even some 285s. I understand the liability issues for the shop and why they would reject to install something out of spec. If they won't do it, then I won't do it on my own either. I'm not ignoring any warnings or disclaimers from the guide. As a fellow engineer I'm all for using equipment only for what it has been designed for. I've been thinking on buying some TE wheels and selling my LE wheels, so maybe that's the safe way to go to get rid of the narrow tires.

If you are going through the trouble of selling your rims and buying new ones, I'd look for something wider than the TE rims. You only get an extra half inch.

Discount Tire guys tend to know less than most auto enthusiasts I've come across. They are simply reading from a database. That same database tells them 2015 vehicles don't even exist yet, so I'm surprised we don't get pushback there too. :dizzy:

Also, I'd like to add another tire to the mix that was recently released.... the BF Goodrich A/T KO2. It's their answer to the Duratrac and seems much improved over the previous version.
I wanted to try something different after running Discoverer AT3s for a couple of years and Duratracs are backordered nationwide in the 275/55/20 size. I decided to go with the BFGs and like them so far. We'll see how they do in the elements.
