AT Tires

I had some MT ATZs on my Dodge 2500 and they were awesome. Don't think the P3 is snowflake rated though. I don't think my ATZ was either, but they did great anyway. The P3 is a little more of a MT that an AT though compared to the regular ATZ.

Didnt see a snowflake

I glanced on the way out of the house this morning and I did not see any M+S or snowflake symbol on the sidewall. I am not too concerned though, in my state we aren't legally bound to stay off the roads by any tire condition and just looking at the tread I am sure they will do fine.

Had these on my 2010 tundra, rode nice and good traction, so hope these do well on the runner.

Mickey Thompson review

Just a prelim review, got my 265/70r17 Mickey ATZ P3's installed tonight. Car is stock besides tires, they fit fine obviously. Ride is great - the steering is better probably due to the stiffer sidewalls, road noise is on par with the GY Duratracs I had on my Tacoma.. They are not silent, but the radio at 1/4 volume covers the tire noise up completely. Will post pics tomorrow at it was dark when I got home. I was scared the 3 ply "PowerPly" sidewalls and E-rating would be too rough but now I think I will like having the firmer, planted feel. I called Mickey Thompson and the said to run 45 PSI in my 2014 Trail Premium, we filled them to 42 cold and it seems to work fine, feels about right.

Final post on these, promise! Just wanted to show pics on the truck. Tires ride great, blows the stockers out of the water. Stock size - e rated 265 70 17s

Have the same tires on my 4th gen for about a year now. Love them! Best tires I have ever owned. They also look so nice! [emoji3]

Nice looking truck, yes I agree they are fantastic tires. My biggest compliment to manufacturer wouldn't be the look, but simply how much more planted and rugged the truck feels now. I'm sure it's the E rating doing that, but the tires feel tough.

I drove from Atlanta to Birmingham this morning in the first heavy rain we've had in months, and subsequently the first rain in my new-to-me '14 TE. I was ready to be disappointed with the wet performance of the BFG KO2s, but I was not able to break them loose accelerating from a stop light, or turning from a stop sign. They gave no feeling of poor grip on surface streets or running 65mph in the heavy rain on I-20. No hydroplaning, and solid grip on a couple hard surprise-braking stabs.

On the way home the rain had stopped and I was running 75-80mph in the dry. The tires are set at 42psi cold. I have not spent any time cruising at higher speeds with these tires and there seems to be a big difference in speeds up to 70mph and speeds over 70mph to 80 or so. I would describe the behavior as "jumpy" and a feeling of not being planted to the road if the surface was anything but smooth. I wouldn't call it alarming, just annoying in that it took more concentration to make sure the vehicle didn't scoot over into the next lane from being jostled Now, when it was smooth it was like glass, but a few gouges in the asphalt would wake things up quickly. Again, this sensation doesn't occur under about 70mph.

I am thinking it must be the difference in the spring rate of the tires and the suspension tuning not jiving well. I was thinking that I would not want someone else like my wife driving the vehicle in those conditions.

Replace spare too?

With any luck I'll have my '16 Trail Premium this week. I'm looking at replacing the tires with Cooper Discoverer AT3 / ATP (stock size). Do most people just buy 4, or also replace the spare? I'm thinking more in terms of improved traction if you get a flat while off-roading. Thanks for any suggestions!

Tire pressure

Throwback. In my opinion 42 psi cold is too high. I keep ours at 35-36 psi cold and have had no problems at 60-80 mphighway speeds in dry, wet or snow, and temps from 20-90F degrees. Happy New Year! - Ted

Agree that 42 psi is to high if running a P metric size (not sure if a higher load range would warrant higher pressure). My local DT likes to set my tire pressure closer to 40 psi feeling that 32 psi is too low. However, after just checking the wear on my Cooper AT3 while inspecting my brake linings, the interior tread is noticeable more worn than the outside tread blocks using my wear bars as a height indicator. Back down to 33 psi.

does interior mean towards center of car or does interior mean center of tire?

if you mean the inside edge towards car, its alignment not pressure and a lower pressure will actually make the wear worse there

(not sure if a higher load range would warrant higher pressure)

Higher load range tires need higher pressures to operate properly. The more weight you are carrying the more PSI is needed to compensate. That's why many load range E tires have max inflation pressures of 80 psi or higher.

The center of the tire. The middle three rows of tread blocks are worn a bit lower than both the interior and exterior rows indicating too high of a pressure so the outer edges of the tires are not touching the road as equally as the middle rows. Sorry for the confusing post.

Speed Rating

The AT tires I have mounted in the past have all been T-rated and have always been in a upgrade in all respects to the tires put on by the factory. With the added weight of the GX460, I am concerned that going from the stock H-rated tire (both the Michelins and Bridgestones are H-Rated) to an AT T-rated tire will result in a softer sidewall and detract from on-road handling. There are at least a couple AT tires that are H-rated: Pirelli Scorpion ATR and Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015, probably more, but neither are top choices for me. I am not concerned about the top end, but with tires in general, higher speed ratings directly correspond with improved cornering, turn-in, etc. Being that it can be argued that the GX is borderline undersprung, I am worried that going with the Cooper Discoverer AT3 tires (my top choice for my next set of tires) or another similar T-rated AT tire might result in sloppy on-road handling for the GX. Ultimately, how much does speed rating between a T-rated AT tire and an H-rated HT tire of the same size impact handling? I know this is an obscure question, but did not want to start a new thread and thought this would be the most applicable place for it.

The Cooper AT3's are just fine. Look at the nominal max load versus the tires you have now. I'm on my 3rd set. They do fine, just like you said they are an upgrade tire.

I am on my second set of AT3s. The first set had 38,000 on them when I traded in my 13 SR5. They were getting a little loud but still had probably had about 10,000 miles left on them. Sold the OEM on my new Trail and bought the new set of AT3s. Would recommend these AT3s for a general all around use tire. If I were doing serious off road I would probably get a different tire but these work very well for what I need them for. They are also quite stable when towing.

Good point about the max load, which I didn’t compare until you posted the above...thank you. For future reference for anyone in the same boat, the max load for each tire in 265/60 R18 is below:

Michelin Latitude Tour HP (one of the 2 GX460 Stock tires): 2065 max load
Cooper Discoverer AT3: 2337 max load for STD Load Range (3000 in the LT version – E Load Range)

Alright. About 35K miles ago I decided that I would replace my 2nd set of Cooper AT3's with Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tires. Both were stock size and P load, or SL as they call them now. Why? Well, Toyota was offering a by three get one free sale and they were OEM on the Pro and they looked good and I had read no negative reviews on them so why not. I spend a lot of time on the highway but for work and a bit of play I do have to go off road so an AT tire is fine for me.

I immediately noticed the Nitto tire did not get as good wet road traction as the Cooper. When pulling out into traffic on wet roads, I would now want to break traction where the Coopers had a higher level of adhesion. No real difference in heavy rain as far as hydroplane goes as both tires did fine in that respect.

The icy slush of winter driving was just the same as wet road traction. The AT3'S win here by a decent margin. When the snow got deep both tires performed admirably. Not as well as a dedicated snow tire of course but much better than an all season tire. So a wash basically. Dirt, mud and rocks I actually preferred the Nitto's. Why? They did not hold the small pebbles as much as the Coopers.

Road noise, when new, was the same. Of course over time every tire gets louder as they wear. Tire wear was also about the same as well. Both tires are around a 50K tire. What was really annoying with the Nitto, and the reason I went back to Cooper was the shake. I know that tires don't have nylon or polyester belts in them anymore but during cold weather or even cool weather the Nitto would seem to "flat spot" a bit after sitting overnight. Not much individually but when they all synced up it would shake. Also it seemed the more they wore the worse the problem would get. I rotate them every 10K and I had them Reba landed twice. After considering every tire from the BFG to the Michelin I decided to go back to the Coopers.

I now have around 2K miles on the new Coopers and they are a very good compromise tire. Just wanted to get this out there.

This is my 3rd set of AT3'S now and, at least for me, there are no balance issues. I was in the shop watching them balance mine and it was quick and painless with very little weight added. Truck is smooth at all speeds, if I can find a smooth road...

I have had a very similar experience with Toyo AT2s. They never balance well. I balanced them about 4 times and never got rid of the shimmy. I just live with it until they're worn out. I put balancing beads in all 4 to help. The Toyo AT2 is the same basic tire as the Nitto with a different tread mold. Otherwise I don't have any major complaints. I wouldn't buy them again though. Nor would I likely buy a the similar Nitto again. I think next time I'll go for the Cooper ATw / xt4.
