At what point are you replacing your dented gas tank skid

Just discovered this. Happened my most recent trip and I feel like I barely hit it. It’s definitely pushing the tank a little. Is this anything to be concerned about? What skids are y’all upgrading too.

Take if off and pound it out so it doesn't touch the gas tank.

IMO, RCI makes the best skids for the RAV4. I have most of them except for the gas tank.

I do have their sliders and they are top notch. I’ll probably spring for their products if I decide to armor up.

If you’re going to take it off to fix, I would just upgrade to a better aftermarket one. The oem fuel tank skid is thin and susceptible to damage. I will go steel like all my other skids, except for my existing front Pro skid, as it is stronger and easier to fix. I do not live in a wet climate however.

I just went out to look at mine and it looks about the same. Haven't put thought into replacing it yet. Can having dents in the skids cause issues?

I have RCI skids and cat protectors on the front and love them; maybe I'll look into RCI for the tank too

yeah mine is similar too but have not worried about it :hiding:

Ya, I’d say replace it now. Granted it has some life left in it, but there’s no more room to absorb hits now that it’s up into the plastic fuel tank.

Also, would suggest some armor for the rear trailing arm front frame mounts. That steel is weaker than it looks, when it takes a direct hit.

Agreed. I need those myself. And while you’re at it, get some rear shock skids also. That is the low hanging fruit on our 4Runners.

How long has it taken do do this much damage? What I mean is if you've had it for a few years and only done that much damage I'd pound it out and move forward till you do more damage. Unless you're planning on doing a lot more aggressive off roading. I'd generally use this approach to most any armor. If you haven't hit it yet why protect it? Armor is a slippery slope, you get a gas tank skid and next you know you're $4000-$6000 deep into armor and bumpers and thinking about a re gear

time to replace it when the gas light comes on immediately after you leave the gas station....:lalala:

Got the car in January. I do plan on taking it in more challenging trails. I just thought the oem skids would hold up better [emoji2371]. Maybe I just need to drive better lol

The plan is to slowly start buying some skids. I was hoping to get the trans and transfer case covered first but I guess I’ll just see what kind of deals I find and start collecting all of them lol. I think the only one I don’t really believe in is the diff skid. And the LCA skids. Useless imo

Yea, the stock tank skid is pretty useless. It's really thin. I just replaced mine with a Victory skid and am really happy with it.

Looking at this picture, you can see the lowest point is the rear diff.

Doing a lift will help the ground clearance in most places, thus the possibility of denting the skids ---- except for the rear diff. No amount of lift will increase the diff ground clearance. Only way to increase the diff ground clearance is bigger tires.
