Attn: Anyone running OEM Black Tokico 80 Series LC SHOCKS in the rear

Not to get in the middle of this too much but Steve's instructions do say to consider mounting them and driving it first before drilling the holes to make sure you like the shock and ride. ........ At least they did with my SS 1.2 kit.

I did go ahead and enlarge the hole on mine, but can understand waiting to make sure also. If I ever decide to change shocks I guess I'll worry about it then but I don't plan to ever go back to stock.

No worries, man. I'm not trying to start a pissing match here, I have a lot of respect for Steve and the knowledge that he has accumulated over the years. I simply wanted to clarify that I had not overlooked the issues that he was concerned about, and have a discussion about everything. Unfortunately that discussion is not likely to unfold because it appears that Steve has deleted his posts and pulled out of this thread after my last post.

Regardless, for future reference his posts have been quoted within my own for context.

I'm really glad that he mentions that in his instructions, it sounds like they were thoughtfully written with his customers best interest in mind.

I'm going to probably get these shocks when I get my rear bumper made. With that, my spare, and my storage drawer setup, I think these shocks and the OME 861's will be the way to go. Thanks for the detailed writeup.

You guys can add me to the list of people running these with the OME 861 rear springs. I went ahead and drilled the stock upper mount, but I also carry a lot of weight, and I had a pretty good idea of what the ride was going to be like. I also do a ton of wheeling and didn't want to risk damaging the upper mounts. If I change shocks down the road I will; A: Find something that fits, or B: Fabricate my own mounts. But, I honestly don't see myself running a high dollar nice shock with the stock (lifted) suspension geometry, if I upgrade down the road it will be for SAS, or long travel; both of which will include a revamp of the rear suspension.

I would say if you don't carry a lot of weight, or if your unsure of your exact build spec's (early stages of your build), it would be a good idea to test run them without drilling the upper mount or install them like BigFishAllDay. They make a big change in how the rear suspension feels; for me it was for the better, but for some it might make the ride too harsh.

ShooterMcGavin this is the thread you want for ordering the bushings/retainers for your Tokicos!

Anybody have any post-install feedback on using generic flat washers on the Tokicos instead of the expensive Toyota ones? I'm putting this all in on Monday and that's the last part I need.

So how did the install go?

It's in and working fine. I didn't end up doing the install. Chickened out because of the weather and lack of garage. Still wringing them out, but so far so good. I definitely need more weight on the back, though. It's very stiff.

I'm installing mines this weekend decided to just bite the bullet and ordered the retaining washers at 10bucks a piece instead of the grade 8 washers. One and done I'll try to take some pictures to add to this informative post started by Bigfish.

I honestly think the washers are fine, but I understand the worry about using non-standard parts on a suspension piece. The pictures would be a big help for future installers. Fortunately on the rears, there's plenty of space to work once you've got it jacked up.

Help with these shocks, please? I am desperate to get my lift installed on my 4Runner!

Ok, I bought these used. They came with some bushings and some washers, but I am sure I need to order parts. Can someone help identify what parts I have and what parts I need to finish this install? Part numbers for what I need to order would be amazingly helpful too :)

On second thought, I'd be fine just buying everything new that I need for the top end, except the pair of washers and the nuts that I have. What are the part numbers to put this together?...

Not sure if you got your problems solved ShooterMcGavin, but I thought I'd update this thread for those out there looking at these shocks.

Camelback sells the retaining washers WITH the shock if you order the entire assembly at $42.28 / each

Hey Grayson, Thanks for writing.
I did get my suspension all figured out and installed. I used some of BFAD's information in the first page, to get part numbers. Also, GSPRunner had told me that he had used the wrong bushings or washers (not sure) and had a bad squeak with his setup.

Here's what I did... I ordered 4 of the washers, part number 90948-02144, so that I now have 6 total. I ordered 6 because 2 of the washers were slightly smaller and didn't seem to properly hold the bushing securely. Looking at the shock with the mounting bolt pointed upwards, I stacked things like this: washer (concave upwards), bushing, washer (concave downwards). That held the lower bushing in place. I then mounted the shock into the vehicle. When I installed the top bushing, it was too thick to allow a top washer and the nut to fit. So, I took a utility knife and cut one bushing in half, perpendicular to the hole, to make 2 thinner bushings (one for each side). I put a thin bushing on the top, another washer (concave downwards), and finished it off with the nut. I've been on it now for a couple thousand miles and offroad a couple times. Works great. No squeaks or other issues.

I should have taken a picture. The setup looks like the last picture above, except the middle washer is one of the larger diameter ones.

if you're installing tokicos be sure to have the welded plates facing forward, I put both of mine on backward, steve's instructions couldn't have been more clearer!:frusty:

Can anyone confirm this that they do come with the washers? It looks like they do in the diagram but no one seems to get them with the shocks. I'll try and call them tomorrow.

If they don't come with the washers is there any issues with running a grade 8 washer? I assume you just get a grade 8 fender washer with the same hole diameter as the shock stud?

I'd just rather not spend $40 on 4 washers if possible...

They do not come with it, it was answered in the first post. Im pretty sure fender washers would work or even dock washer if you want thicker ones.
I went ahead and spent the extra 36$ for proper washers.

OK, I was just wondering since the one member I quoted said they do come with it and when you look at the part diagram on Camelbak Toyota's website it definitely shows the washers as coming with it. I wonder if they used to be included and they are not anymore for some reason. I'll probably try and find some fender washers or dock washers(never heard of these until now) to use instead, I think that should work and should only cost about $4.

Well I have a set coming from toyotaonlineparts on tuesday if you are still curious shoot me a pm to remind me Ill let you know what comes with it. Dock washers are just thicker fender washers.
