audio upgrade....confused

So.....I was trying to upgrade my stereo system today, because the weather is nice.

Got the old radio out, got the new one mounted to the little mounting bracket and pocket, go to start wiring up the wiring harness supplied with the new Alpine harness to the Metra adapter I bought, and now therein lies the issue.....I've got one plug coming from the truck that went into the back of the stero, and according to the wiring harness, I've got two different wiring harness plugs it wants me to hook into.

Audio gurus? Help me out here? Please? I'd prefer to not have to cut and splice the factory harness, and I cannot for the life of me see another plug anywhere inside the dash for this second plug, like I saw in a 97's install.

next semi-stupid question.....the blue/white wire that is jumpered on the small connector.....it shouldnt matter what blue wire i attach it to, should it?

I would think power antenna should be the one that needs power even though both *will* get power
 
On a side note .... I suggest you buy two boxes of these from your local auto parts store. Using spades is great because it allows for easy troubleshooting and head unit swaps down the road.

thoroughly frustrated with myself right now.

despite trimming both the mounting points and the center dash trim, I cannot seem to get the radio with the pocket to fit correctly. Broke a mounting tab for the center dash trim on the top

Took the pocket off for now. Radio is canted to the right.
 
did you also get the antenna adapter so you can use both antennas,, but in your picture I only see one antenna lead, maybe mines a freak.

sadly the previous owner cut my harnesses
some people at this point also put in a little switch so you can kill your antenna form going up. Such as for my 2000, when I'm on back roads with lots of low hanging stuff, I might want to listen to music, but don't want the antenna up and getting grabbed.
with the antenna adapter, your rear window antenna still pulls in good signal with out the electric one up

You should be able to use the factory radio brackets on your new head unit? Did you somehow miss place the bracket on one side of your head unit causing it to lean? Is it a single din or double din deck?

single din. with the brackets and with me trimming the dash trim, it will not fit behind the panel correctly so the dash panel makes it lean. I guess I need to do more trimming today.

The motor on mine is already broken/antenna is broken, so theres a different antenna jerry rigged on the truck.

I found out that the clock was connected in that blank slot, but to no avail. Clock still doesnt work :( I'll probably have to send it off to be repaired.

I just put a T1819 Scion in the 97 limited puppy hauler yesterday. Major trimming and bracket modding. I still need the cable for Bluetooth mic.

yours looks better than the final product on mine. I may end up re-doing the whole set-up. Time to start looking for another center dash trim.

Even with a friend today who used to do professional install's helping me do some final trimming, we had to trim one side way down, and theres now a gap in the other. Just overall not completely happy.

I still need to finish running the wiring for the bluetooth mic.

I didn't order it yet for this one. I installed one in my 97 SR5 a few months ago. Liked this radio setup so good I fit one in my 2002 Saturn SL1.

Sorry to tell you this since it's too late but you're trying to mount that all wrong. Toyota's use an ISO mount. You remove the brackets from the side of the factory radio, add a universal metra pocket to the underside of your radio and screw the brackets onto both sides of the radio and pocket. Then the assembly mounts to the sub dash and you put the factory trim back on. No trimming required.

You do not use the aftermarket radio's sleeve or it's trim ring. Those are only used in a DIN mount application. I

You might try to score a used factory trim off eBay or at a junkyard if the trimming you've done is too far now.
 
Yeah... you didn't need to trim anything. Just remove the brackets, or the metal "sleeve" it fits into. Will bolt right in.
 
I think if you buy one of these it will go a lot smoother.

Usually you get one for free with a new stereo from Crutchfield.

yeah I bought that metra pocket from bestbuy.

I didnt realize that the plastic surround for the radio came off. That was where I messed up.

Time to source a new bracket and a new center dash trim.

Shit.

Since I love messing up, and it bothered me so bad I bought another center dash trim (with a working clock), and a new set of brackets,

how do I remove the trim bezel from around the stereo? i bought the radio off amazon (better deal) so I basically got no installation instructions.
