audio upgrade focals

Looking at the following for a budget audio build

installed a sony 8100 from trail grid pro and love it but wife isn't a fan. She prefers the stock look still. I'm looking to replace the speakers, nothing over the top though and can pick up a 4 channel taco tunes amp at a good price if needed.

Considering the following speakers

PowerBass OE69C-TY front doors 6x9 use tweeters in dash $155
PowerBass OE65C-TY rear doors wont use the tweeters $129. ....low/mid bass
PowerBass OE652-TY OE Series 6-1/2" 2-way car speakers $99. tailgate. (looks to be the same ones used from taco tunes) Taco tunes rebranded theirs

Taco tunes lists rear/tailgate both using 2 way coaxial speakers
OEM audio plus rear low/mid and coaxial in tailgate

Thoughts on set up? Looking for a reasonable upgrade but nothing over the top.

I changed all my speakers to the OEM Audio + and really like them. Crisper highs and a bit more base. The nice thing about them is they are plug and play, meaning there is no wire cutting, spicing or adapters needed. They also make a sub-woofer and amplifier for the 4Runner, but then the price starts to get steep.

Yes the price does jump some with them.i don’t mind slicing and soldering if needed. What brand speakers does oem audio use? Speakers I’ve listed have good reviews and don’t really need an amp. Oem audio plus is double the price . I’m not looking to add a sub , i do need the space, looking for a clean crisp quality sound.

Do you have coaxial speakers in rear doors or woofers?

I'm in a 3rd Gen, but the addition of a sub made the most difference and you might want to try that first.

I added a 9" Recoil powered sub under under the driver seat. It instantly added the missing low end and has a remote level knob I put in the front console. I lost zero cargo space doing this. Optionally, the Recoil units can be wall mounted.

I will eventually upgrade my kick panel speakers in the front door but it's less of a priority after adding the sub.

Considering the time and hassle of modifying things, the OEM Audio route seems worth considering. My sub install took hours to do nicely.

For those who did the OEM audio plus what brand speakers are they? Also did you do an amp for the speakers or just run them off the head unit (stock or aftermarket)

They make their own speakers; they are not a re-supplier of other people's speakers.

Their speakers are a bit more efficient so that are a bit louder than the Toyota speakers. Thus, you may not need an additional amplifier depending on how loud you like your music.

They have a much higher power rating than the Toyota speakers; the Toyota speakers are prone to blow out if over driven.


They are a mix of coaxial speakers and single cone speaker depending on location. I believe the rear hatch speakers are coaxial. See the description:

dont think i'm going with a sub, think itll be the powerbass set up or a mix and match.

Did come across a decent deal on focal 6x9s. Perk site I get $50 off 500 plus another 10%

need adapters and harnesses $20-30, fit is questionable still

POWERBASS OE652-TY 6.5 is probably the best plug and play option. $90-99 range. Same speakers used by taco tunes just rebranded?

installed the Focal 6 x 9" 2-Way Component Kit (Pair) - KIT IS 690 TOY 6x9s this evening. The focal woofers /crossovers brought the kicker tweeters alive!!! Those will be up for sale soon.
Direct plug and play, only issue was the door panel

The tweeter were another story, not really plug and play. The bracket wasn't wide enough, had to grind the hole a tad bigger to make it work. Tweeters sound great but are tad small compared to the kicker ones.

reinstalling the door panel DONT remove the window sill part!!! I struggled with it for about 20 minutes and stepped away. After a few searches I found out that was my issue. I reinstalled the window sill and panel, it took all of 2 minutes.

install took all of 20 minutes for all speakers and panels simple to take off and reinstall. Key thing to remember is the window sill

first time on front doors
try not to remove the window sill part!!! I struggled with it for about 20 minutes and stepped away. After a few searches I found out that was my issue. I reinstalled the window sill and panel, it took 2 minutes.

The power bass speakers sound great, budget speakers that work extremely well. They appear to be the same ones used by Taco tunes. All speakers were plug and play. I'll have to play with the settings since the focals seem to over power the rear. Highly recommend the focal speakers from ABT site only $279. I was able to get a discount through my employer perks site.


Took the 4runner out to play with the speakers, they'r LOUD and clear!!! The PB's are great, faded the volume towards the rear. Would recommend focals and PB
