Auto Lock Choices

Have any of you changed the default setting for out auto-locks? Currently, mine lock when I put it in Drive and unlock when I hit Park. This si okay, but I explored the 8mph engagement and did not like it. The biggest reason I did not keep it that way is that if you have it in Drive, then put it in Park, the locks disengage. When you return it to Drive and go faster than 8mph, this time is DOES NOT re-engage the locks.

Any others?

I did change mine the day after I got it. Didn't like them unlocking as soon as you hit Park. In the owners manual it tells you how to change them, but.................. if I remember correctly, the manual is backwards.

Do what it tells you to make the locks operate how they are now, and it changes them so they will lock when you take it out of park, and will unlock when you turn the key off.

I have played with this several time, and I guess I will keep it where they lock in D and unlock in P.

Any other suggestions?

You can also alter when the unlock; choices are when you hit park, or when the drivers door is unlocked from the inside after the key is removed from the ignition.


the manual for the '06 seems correct, but when they say 5 seconds, they mean 5 seconds, not 5 1/4 or something. I count with the : indicator on the clock.

I have mine setup to lock when I switch from Park to Drive. But I didn't like the thought of stopping in a bad area and needing to enter something into the nav for a couple of minutes and having the doors unlock. I changed mine so they unlock when the drivers side door is open.

I've left mine alone from the factory (Locked in D, Unlock in P) but wish for the sake of my wife that they could code separate fobs for different driver setups so when she used it that it wouldn't unlock until Key-Out - and go back to the factory setting while I used it...But I ain't going to gripe about it, it isn't that big a deal to me. I also wish the window controls weren't in the door pocket either - wish they were on the console (or higher up in a different door panel design) - but ain't about to trade the 4Runner away over it.

But coding separate fobs for separate drivers is possible. My 2003 Chevy Traiblazer LTZ has it, and there are a lot of different settings between mine and my wife's "driver profiles" in its computer beyond the locking settings - and are activated depending on which fob locks or unlocks the truck. Our saved radio stations in that truck are even different depending on the fob used...Again though, you notice I bought a 4R and not another Trailblazer - so I ain't complaining loudly.

Nice to know for future that the 4R can be coded to have separate keys...for now though, no one else is allowed to drive my 4R

Actually, I said I *wish* it were possible. I do not know, and do not think, that it is possible with 4Runners. Our fobs are not numbered on the back (1,2,3) like they are for my Trailblazer, and is why I don't think it's possible.

On my '06 the locking and unlocking functions are independent of each other. Repeat the process for either: locking when shifting out of park and/or locking above 12mph, or unlocking in park and/or turning off the ignition key will enable the function if disabled or disable the function if enabled.

From the factory the default was it unlocked automatically in park and did not lock automatically.

Currently, mine locks when shift out of park and when I exceed 12mph. If I unlock the doors, it will relock if I shift out of park or exceed 12mph such as picking up someone. It does not unlock at all automatically. This setup works perfectly for me.
