Auto to 5 speed swap, need your input!

Can't help that. Let us knwo when it makes it.

Will do!

Forgot to mention, I swapped t-cases over so the manual now has the push button 4wd t-case. I also drained the trans fluid and refilled with Redline MT-90.

Dan did you see the info I posted to make the clutch cancel button functional?

Transmission is in!

All that is left to do now is the hydraulics and driveshafts.

I had to swap the 4wd shifter around because it was hitting the 5 speed shifter in 2nd/4th and reverse. No big deal just a clip and it pops out.

Before removing the A/T ECU I wanted to make sure that it would run. Fired her up, got 10 codes... Oh boy...

I got your typical shift solenoid codes and about 6 or 7 engine missfire codes. Turns out I forgot to plug in a line to the charcoal canister....whoops. Oh well, easy fix!

Reverse lights work, and the vehicle will NOT start until the clutch is depressed, just like factory.

Went to plug in the manual trans ECU, no dice, the manual trans ECU has completely different plugs than the auto trans ECU. Oh well, guess I'll just have to live with a CEL, either that or swap wiring harnesses (kicking myself now for not grabbing the harness out of the 96' parts 4Runner).

I attempted to engage 4wd by hitting the button and shifting into 4low but no lights came on the dash. I think maybe because the driveshaft is disconnected the front diff cannot activate 4x4? I'm not sure.

4x4 works!!

I read what I could on the VSV and went on with my day.

I figured i'd re-connect everything on the truck and go from there. Hooked up the driveshafts, jacked the front wheels off the ground (the rear is already on jackstands) and again attempted to engage 4x4. Still nothing. So I put the 4Runner in first gear and slowly let off the clutch and low and behold I have 4x4!!! YAY!

Did you end up having to switch over the crossmember? Or are you still using the one from your automatic.

And which front drive shaft did you decide on?

Crossmembers are identical, no need to change them.

I swapped in both driveshafts off my donor, they fit better. The front really doesn't matter but the rear you will need to use the one off the manual or get a driveline spacer.

Awesome cuz the bolts on my donor crossmember are rusted clumps of a bolt.

And the front drive shaft on the donor is in rough shape as well, so i was hoping to keep my auto one.

Thanks for the help. Thats exactly what i was hoping to hear.

Glad I could help. I just drove my yesterday for the first time and let me tell you it is so much better than the automatic.

Do you have any actual wires running to your clutch pedal? If so can you explain to me where they run?

Kind of dumb questions here but I didn't research that much because I wasn't expecting to need to do any. Lol anyways.

What is the "clutch up" switch you refer to in your diagrams? My clutch pedal only has the depressed switch.

Second. Without the clutch cancel switch, and any wires going to the pedal would it start and run?

I'm asking because I found that the plug going into my clutch pedal is missing from the donor truck. They simply have the two wires twisted together...

Totally sucks to. Was planning on putting the motor/Trans in tomorrow but might have to wait now.

You can still put the motor and trans in. I wouldn't hold off on that for the wiring.

The clutch "up" switch works with your cruise control. There should be a depress switch on the top of the clutch pedal so that when you release the clutch, the switch depresses.

You do not technically need the depress switch or a clutch cancel switch. You would still have to isolate the wires that should go to the clutch depress switch and connect them as was done in your donor truck. Without doing this at the least, no, the truck will not start.

Thanks man for the help. I reread your thread last night and kinda have it. My plan is to still swap the motor and Trans over. Use the automatic harness, and my manual ecu. That way I can just follow your examples in wiring it up.

And I looked at it again. I don't have the clutch release switch. Must be because the donor didn't have cruise control. So I'll have to order that and wire it up later.

Also, I was originally planning on switching from my electric shift transfer case to the j shift one. Which case/harness are you using?

I have a paper '99 EWD (Electrical Wiring Diagram) book. Would a scan of those pages help you?

I can tell you the two position detection switches on the J-shift T-case are for the ADD system. One side does 4H and the other does 4L. If I look at the truck I can remember which is which. The switch on the 5-speed trans is just for the back-up light. The dash light is controlled by the position switch on the front diff. That's all you have to do underneath.

As far as the J-shift 5-speed goes, the lever engages the TC, which closes a position switch, which closes the ADD relay, which enables vacuum to front diff actuator which engages the diff and closes the switch that turns on the dash light.

Forgive me if you knew all this.

Hey man. Wondering if you had any more detail about these plugs on the j shift case. I woukd like to use it with my 5 speed but nobody mentions about wiring it up. All I can find isthe trans stuff.

Is the donor and your current 4runner the same year? If not, you may run into issues swapping ecus without swapping harnesses. Also, you might want to double check the plugs on the manual ecu and the automatic harness. My understanding is that in 1996 the plugs were different on the automatic and manual equipped models. So - a manual ECU cannot be plugged into an auto harness. I don't know for sure on this - you might want to check swimmerboy's thread as he and I discussed this. I think his is a 1997 as well. Just a heads up before you toss any parts that you think you won't need.

I am running a j-shift, but I had a j-shift originally. Therefore, no wiring changes for the transfer case were needed.

I would have to crawl under to verify, but I think there were only two. Again - check swimmerboy's thread as I think we talked a little about this. There is nothing complicated about hooking up the j-shift case, but I don't have access to the 4runner to crawl under it and look at the plugs right now. Post #14 in my thread on TTORA shows the two plugs on the side of the j-shift case. One is grey and one is blue. There is also a picture of the electric shift case that came with my tranny. You can make out two plugs ont he side of it, but the wiring was damaged when I got it. You can verify this on yours though. If anything, I think you will probably just have some wires that would run to the electric motor that won't be used for the j-shift.

I can post diagrams for the 5-speed with electric shift and with J-shift from '99. I think you should have your own thread rather than just ask questions all over the forum so we can better understand what you are doing. I don't want to post pages of diagrams in Swimmerboy2112's thread.

This is not as simple as it sounds as the electric TC has 3 or 4 position switches and the J only two, and they trigger in different ways; it's not a straight correspondence. Give me a mention in your thread and I'll find it.

Tell me exactly what electronics you have truckside to connect to.

IF I was doing a swap in my 86 from auto to manual all the parts are out of the same year and make do I need to switch my ECU?

Did you mean '96? For '86 you should be asking in the Classic T4R's forum....

If it's a '96, it will work with the auto ECU but you will have a forever CEL light on for problems in the auto trans that isn't there.
