Auto to 5 speed swap, need your input!

i lost track of this thread somehow and have missed most of the last posts. Glad to hear you got cruise working! I've gotten a lot of things figured out with mine lately. Because i have the computer tricked into thinking it is in Drive for the cruise to work, it runs the Auto Tranny fuel map which causes a brief hesitation at Wide Open Throttle. When i push my Clutch Start Cancel button it tricks the truck into thinking it is in neutral and runs a different fuel map which does not have a hesitation :)

If your truck races up because of the cruise you can either hit the brake to cancel it or pull the entire cruise selection knob toward you

Ive been driving around all day and i think i found a way to trick the #2 VSS CEL... I wired one of my front ABS sensors into the ECM instead of the sensor that was on the removed auto tranny. The front sensors looks very similar to the VSS that was on the A340F and it seems to work the same, they both have a single round magnet or diode on the tip. The rear ABS sensors have two flat long magnet/pickups on the tip thats why i decided to use the front. Ohm readings between the sensors were 1700 for the tranny and and 700 for the ABS. doesn't seem to be affecting my speedo. Not sure what the ECM does with that signal either... but no CELs for me :)

I have a 2002 that I did a 5speed swap on.

My swap was very simple and I did not swap any wire harnesses. I simply jumpered my automatic trans harness at the connector, shortened my front drive shaft, swapped my ECM for a manual one from a Tacoma 2004, wired up the reverse light, etc.

All of this while retaining the multi mode transfer case. So if you want to keep the push button transfer case that shouldn't be a problem. It's control is independant of the engine control.

Just so you know. Anyone that is 96-98 is not as simple as changing the ecu. Those years ecu are different between auto and manual and different pins.

I haven't tried the pull the entire cruise selection know toward me.

What happened to me was. When I tested my cruise control. I set it on cruise. And I pushed the clutch to see what would happen. And it reved like a mother f*****. I hit the break and nothing. So I just shut the engine of. And it was fine. But if I'm on cruise control. Tapping the break disables it.

Wonder why on 97 the cc is in the engine bay and not under the center console. But all good though

yeah that is strange. I have a 97 limited Automatic (converted) and it was under the dash...
Im glad you were somewhat ready after our warnings, you can see how shit can get outta hand really quick, lol

I always preferred canceling my cruise with the cruise knob rather the brake. That little knob does a lotta different stuff. haha

I have the option to go pick up a manual out of a 1995 t100. It had the 3.4 v6. I have a 2000 4runner so I know that wiring would suck but do you guys think its even possible to make that set up work?

I am having a hard time finding the connectors for the replacement 5spd ECM. found a thread that had part numbers BUT, dealer ordered and they were not correct

98 ECM 5spd 4x4 V6

Calling LKQ tomorrow to see if they can get a wiring harness, but was hoping to just repin the existing harness

I don't see why you couldn't rebuilt a transmission if you know what your doing yes.
If he asked, I think it's safe to say he doesn't exactly "know what he is doing".
That said, manual transmissions aren't too complicated. If you're meticulous, have a good sized working area/bench, are organized, and have a good selection of tools- I think it's a great idea. If any one of the above are lacking, don't take it on yourself.

Is it possible / practical to refurbish a manual tranny with new syncros etc for better shifting?

What's the worst that can happen!!
"Select a snap ring that will allow minimum axial play."
" Using a dial indicator, measure the radial clearance." Have yet to find a Dealer stocking the snap rings that you'll need..Hurry up and wait.

There is very little wiring to the actual transmission involved in this. I am sure that all of the wiring in my transmission swap has been previously posted. You should look at that. I would think it would work just fine.

The ECM plugs should be the same between a 1998 manual and a 1998 automatic. I know because I did this swap on a 1998 and just repinned the harness. If your ECM plug receptacles on the ECM are different something isnt right. You may have a Tacoma ECM. The plugs are different between the Tacoma and the 4Runner. Will try to get a picture uploaded for you when I can get photobucket to work.

I don't know how to say it any other way. 4runner. 96-97 manual and auto have completely different ECU. Meaning: different connectors and pinouts.

98-02 it's plug and play between auto and manual.

Ofcourse Tacoma will be different.

I don't see why you couldn't repin. After a repin your only losing the auto transmission pins.

Yeah - fella above was talking about a 1998. If his ecu and wiring dont match up he either has a ecu from a Tacoma or a pre-1997 ecu. I included the Tacoma photo because parts sites often list Tacoma parts as interchangeable.

Thanks for the advise, I have a 2000 Auto that had a 98 engine and 5 speed put into it.

2000 Auto ECM trying to repin to a 98 5speed ECM that I got from LKQ. If the connections are then same for a 98 Auto, I can get that from a junk yard local, thought I had to have a 5 speed connector.

My head hurts from reading all the info out there, good and bad.

The connections won't be the same. You will have to read EWD and make a repin chart.

Here is a post I created by sharing someone else info. It explains the basics of repinning and reading EWD

I read through this entire thread and still am not sure about my ECM/harness requirements.

I have a '98 Auto and purchased a '99 transmission, etc. I found a '98 M/T ECU and am wondering if this will work with my '98 Auto harness? I am pretty sure there will be some re-pinning required which is fine - but I'm trying to determine if it would be easier to rein my harness and use the '98 ECU or swap harnesses/ECU with the '99 donor?

Thanks!!
Jim

Hey Jim,

Ignore the fact that your new transmission comes from a 1999 truck, it's not going to matter in this case.

What you need to focus on is your own vehicle's requirements - swap an ECU from a 98 M/T, it will plug right into your 98 Auto harness.
