Automatic Shift Lever

I did some research prior to posting but couldn't find a fix so far. This morning temps around 30 I had let the truck warm up for a few and jumped in headed to work. When I tried to shift(auto trans) between Park and Drive the shift felt fine through park, reverse and neutral. It was pretty to tough to get it to into drive. I ran it back through P,R,N a few times and it seemed to loosen up. My question is this...is the automatic shift lever to the trans a cable, linkage or electrical connection? If its a cable or linkage is there anyway to get some lube in there? If its electrical what could be causing it to really have to pull pretty hard to get it to go into drive. Other than a pain to get it into drive the trans shifts perfect. I don't think the cold is the reason as it did this once before in the summertime. This one's got me stumped, hope you all can offer some good suggestions.
Thanks again

With the truck warmed up my auto trans shift lever was tough getting into D and damned near impossible to get into L1. Fluid is clear and full and after putting foot on the brake and shift through the gears the shifter lever seems to loosen up. Once the truck sits for a bit the problem comes back. Not sure if your supposed to grease the linkage or could this be electrical? This ones got me stumpped. Thanks everyone for your help.
