Automatic transmission

Automatic transmission on my 1988 4runner appears to be going out. What years are compatible? Thanks.

You have an A340H, which you'll find on V6 4Runners from '88 to '95. I think they're in V6 pickups from '88 to '94, but don't quote me on that.

4cyl automatics from '84 to '99 and 3.4 V6 4Runners from '96 on use the A340F, which might work for you. I say might because once upon a time I replaced an A340F with an A340H and it was completely compatible, but I don't know for sure if that works the other way.

Thanks for the clarification. How hard is the remove and replace? I do a lot of my own work on an 88 Celica Alltrac. I figure it can't be any worse than that.

It's heavy, you'll want a transmission jack. Other than that it's pretty straightforward. A couple harness connections, drop the driveshafts, bolts on the bell housing and cross member and yank it out.

The A340F's have a different speed sensor and takes some work. Also not sure the A340H's transfer case would mate up. The F's transfer case won't work because it drops on the wrong side.

If you're comfortable with stick shift, I'd recommend swapping to the 5 spd at this point. It would make the 3.0 feel significantly better.

Depends on the tcase. Early 22RE/automatic trucks had an A340F with a passenger drop tcase. You wouldn't see an A340F with driver drop tcases until 95 Tacomas and 96 4Runners.

Are you sure about the speed sensor? I'm no expert but I'd swear that was an A340H we put on my 1986 when the A340F went out, and everything bolted right up with no hassle.
