AWD problem or not??

New member here. Hope someone can help. I have a 2001 6cyl 4runner with 390K miles. No rust and runs perfect. My question is about my AWD. When I press the button on the AWD shift lever the dash lights continue to flash without the AWD engaging until I make a right or left turn. Then it engages and works fine. I read a bunch about changing the sensors on the transfer case but dont want to if its not necessary. I can't remember that far back but when I bought the truck I thought the AWD engaged shortly after pressing the button. When I disengage it it comes out of AWD perfect. Don't really want to take it to the dealer who said it cost a bit to diagnose the problem. Should I just live with making a turn to get it to engage or do you think changing the sensors will help return in back to normal.. Thanks Dan :ybrick:

There are plenty of threads about this. In my experience, the 4WD kicks in if the wheels are straight, no gas, no brakes, it all has to line up perfectly. If it only takes a few seconds for the light to appear solid, I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think I've ever driven one that goes into 4WD perfectly every time. Heck, my 2012 is a little finicky.

AWD Problem or not

That's my concern. If I continue to drive straight the lights just flash and it doesn't engage. I need to turn before it engages. That's why I thought perhaps a problem with one of the sensors. If I have to live with few turns rather than spend a ton of money to fix it I guess I will have to live with it. It's just a real pain. Thanks for your thoughts. Any other guesses.....
