Axle seals,shoes and new drums are needed

Well I'm at 176k miles on my truck and I did the rear seals and shoes at 100k miles 8 years ago and now it's time for the same.

I have a regular mechanic I've been using since '98 but for chuckles and grins I called Brakes Plus and asked them for a quote on everything (new drums,shoes,inner and outer seals,gear oil) and got a rediculous number of over $1100 and my mechanic will do the same job for $540 out the door. I couldn't believe how bad BS (appropriate) rips off people.

No doubt about it, brakes plus (and other, similar shops) are a total scam designed to lure you in with a low price, then proceed to tell you that without major brake repairs (priced outrageously) you and your family's lives are at risk. Total BS. Hopefully you told them as much.

Shows the value of a good, honest mechanic vs. a franchise/chain whose only goal is to make as much money as possible...

$1700 here in Obamaland (DC) at the stealership, $1200+ at a foreign indy shop, $325 with all OEM parts in my driveway except for the $50 needed for me to take it to the machinist for press work.

This mechanic I've been using used to sponsor my DSM when I was into the racing scene and he has always kept things cheaper than alot of his quotes and he's been spot-on with the very few things my 4Runner has needed over the last 8 years.

A guy at a Firestone once said my inner tire rods are bad without even removing the dust boot!

Pep boys asked me to do a radiator flush in my car when I went in to do a courtesy checkup. I told that guy, I replace the entire radiator with new coolant about a week ago....
