Axle Swap

My pinion bearings are shot.

When I bought my 4runner 2 1/2 years ago the diff breather was rusted shut and the driver axle seal was puking fluid. That was 115k I now have 160k.

Instead of fixing the pinion just to have a wheel bearing failure shortly after. I was thinking about a whole new axle from a wreaking yard.

There is a 2009 4runner 2wd with 40k near by. Would the 2wd rear axle work with my 4wd?

Another option is a 2008 fj with a locking diff 3.73 gears. Could this work and give me a locking rear axle if i wire it up?

Or should i stop dreaming and just have the bearing replaced?

Thanks

The 4runner housings are the same, so it will bolt in, but there are internal differences, such as the carrier bearings are smaller on the 2wd models.

Don't quote me, but I think the FJ axle is a direct swap. If you're replacing the whole axle, I think you may even be able to upgrade to the 8.2 off the 5th gens with e-locker.

I thought about this as well as there are 5th gen and 2010 plus FJ's near by with low miles.

I could be mistaken but i thought I read the 5th gen axle was 1.5 inch wider than the 4th gen axle.

Does any one know if the 5th gen axle could mount up to a 4th gen without modification?

Nyc-Runner did a 07-09 FJ rear end swap.

The 2010+ FJ axle can be swapped as well, though not sure if it is wider or what other parts are needed.
