axle wrap help

I've got an 85 4runner with the 2.5" OME lift installed. I'm noticing a disturbing "thud" when taking off from a stop as well as when shifting into 2nd. I had the wife drive back and forth in a parking lot and noticed the rear differential appears to jerk upward slightly when abrupt clutch movements are made.

I've read on the forums about people using anti wrap bars but it usually seems to apply on more aggressive lifts. I feel like something must be setup incorrectly but I'm not really sure where to look. I torqued the u-bolts to 90ft lbs. I also pulled the driveshaft and checked the pinion flange. The nut was able to moved by hand so i tightened it down. As i haven't had the truck long, i'm not really sure how tight to torque the nut; I tightened approximately 50ft lbs of torque. Unsure if it would come into play for my axle wrap issues but i figured i'd throw out all the information i have.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Careful. That pinion nut cannot be tightened down too much or you will destroy your crush sleeve, therefore causing gear damage.

On the wrap, how old are your springs?

The pinion nut was loosE!!! Sheeesh.

Some axle wrap is ok. I would check the rest of your drive shafts and engine mounts for other loose bolts.

When I had lift blocks in the rear mine would axle wrap bad. Rear springs get weak over time so may need to add leave or two to get them back into shape.

Where in Missouri are you located?

Unless your springs are bad or you've got a big block V8 under the hood, OME springs are not near flexy enough to cause wrap. You'll always see the third deflect slightly up or down under abrupt torque changes, I wouldn't suspect trouble based on that.

How are your u-joints on the axle shaft, any play? When's the last time you greased them?

For the noise, start by making sure the drive shaft slip joint is greased, that's a real common cause of thuds like that. Then check u-joints, bad ones will do that too.

Sorry for the delayed response. Been a hectic week. Thank you very much for your suggestions.

I read several posts talking about people torquing the nut to 90 ftlbs so i figured 50 should be safe. How do you recommend I torque the nut? Most reading i have done suggests figuring out the approximate torque prior to removal; however, since mine was so loose that is not an option.

The springs are about 6 months old so they should be in good shape. I suspect trouble mostly based on the noticable thud on takeoff or shifting. I don't really know how to tell if u-joints are bad but i did grease them. I've also greased the axle slip joint. No noticeable improvement.

just wanted to wrap up this thread. I ended up replacing my u joints and that seems to have cured my issue. Thanks for the suggestion.

You can go 100+ft lbs and not worry. The crush sleeve takes a lot more then that it crush. Is set it at 90-100 tho
