I bought my separate ATF cooler and looking to install tomorrow. Anyone had any problems with ATF running to hot? I have 2002 4runner 4x2. Little to no towing.... Just rear hitch cargo rack when hunting. My concern is my daily commute to office ..... Average daily commute is 1 hour in stop and go traffic on interstate. Outside temps in Dallas area can be 100 degrees 20+ days in summer. Anyone run external cooler separate from bottom of radiator with ATF cooler in front grill.... And similar weather conditions and driving conditions? How has fluid temps run? Thank. FYI I'm new to forum so thanks n advance for info.

Trying to avoid pink milkshake disaster ..... I have 177k mile on stock radiator!

IMHO, if you have that much stop and go traffic to take on, I'd personally get a Koyo radiator. Run the B&M in-line after the radiator ATF exchanger as they call it, with the B&M mounted directly against the AC condenser and in front of the fan. If you have any doubts about your fan clutch, get a new Aisin one as well.

It would also be a good idea to drain and fill your transmission once or twice with some new fluid. Nothing kills a transmission like heat, or the pink milkshake.

x2 on the cooler+new Koyo inline combo. I was in the same boat a while back and just swapped the radiator for a new Koyo for the time being, as I'm in a colder climate with 99% of my driving coming during off-peak hours on the open highway, and I don't tow or wheel (it's a ski/camping/shooting rig as well as DD). If I were in your position I would even think about swapping the 70268 for the larger 70264, and maybe running an extra electric fan on the cooler toggled by a temperature switch if you want to bypass the radiator's internal cooling all together still.

Everyone has their own opinion on this topic and there's nothing wrong with the above two. My opinion is that you're fine. Will you see 200+ trans temps during those hot stop and go days? Maybe. Is that bad? Not to me. Others on here think 200 is the death toll for trannys. To me going over 200 once in a while is no big deal. But I drain and fill my trans every time I change the oil (once a year, 8-10K miles). I never want to think about the pink milkshake again so I bypassed even my new Koyo rad.
