Back in the game- question on multi-mode

Hi all,

Just picked up a 2000 limited with 140k miles- sold my 2005 sport edition a couple years ago to get a Sienna (3 kids) and finally got around to replacing it (replaced a 4g with a 3G...but oh well, so far I like it).

Anyhow - when using the button to shift into full time 4wd the transfer case indicator just blinks endlessly (the 4 tires and center dif). The strange thing is that it then shifts fine into H4l and 4low and the indicator turns solid. I can also hear/feel a clunk when I push the button to disengage full time 4wd and the blinking light turns off.

Anyone had this issue before? I searched but it seems like most if the issues were that none of the 4wd modes would engage or that they wouldn't disengage.

Thanks in advance.

Mine does the same from time to time. The actuator has trouble lining everything up when under load so I usually back off the gas if I'm moving, if that doesn't work, or I'm stationary, a quick pop into neutral and then back into drive does it.

Mine does the same thing but this winter has seen a lot of snow(for our area) and I had to use the 4wd quite often but the more I used it, the faster it engaged. The first time I hit the button this winter it took a lot of time before it engaged but after that it worked great.

Thanks....got it working

Thanks for the replies. I eventually got it to engage in full-time after going through neutral/drive/reverse and a bit of back and forth. Seems like it just needed some encouragement.

My multi-mode engages the same way

What i've learned is to engage at a 'low' speed, say under 30 (i know officially up to 62 but i don't want to do that!) then I engage just before i turn right at least 60-70 degrees, if i do it this way its a quick 2 sec engagement. The more i use it the better it engages/disengages. So next time you get the blinking for a bit try turning to the right for just a bit. Overall i think it pretty normal now, i didn't think so at first.

One more thing I like to do is hit the button periodically throughout the year even if I dont need it....just keeps evrything moving from time to time.

I'd first try to replace the 2 rear switches on the rear transfer case. If that doesn't help, then there are 2 on top of it which are harder to get to but you can through the inside of the cab next to the shifter.

I've been working on getting mine fixed but had no luck yet. I can't get mine to engage at all but still trying new ideas before I have to drop $x,xxx on a new transfer case.
