Hello everyone, William here.
I used to have a 2000 Highlander/Sport 4WD back in 2000-2004 and pretty much left it stock other than adding the e-locker option (that I should have gotten when it was ordered new). Since then I have been driving Pilots, CX-9's, etc... and decided that I wanted to get back to something I could off-road and have some fun. So I have been looking high and low for the right 4Runner to begin with.
Enter a pretty clean 2001 Sport Edition I just picked up today with 171k miles on it:
The truck runs excellent, everything (even the clock) works as expected. The t-belt and water pump were replaced at 164k miles and I have stealership maintenance records since 2003 (every oil change, tire rotation, etc...). The only things I can say need an immediate look at is a slight shimmy in the wheel when braking - plus it pulls a little to the left on hard breaking.
The quick list of planned mods/upgrades are as follows:
- Tundra Brake Upgrade and Alignment (should remedy above issues)
- Rear E-Locker install (still have the one I removed from my 2000 Sport)
- 2DIN Pioneer NAV/BT/Backup Camera and Speakers
- Suspension refresh (bushings, ball joints, etc...)
- Replace springs/shocks (not much sag, but shocks need replaced)
- Install Homelink mirror (yeah, will not help much when in the sticks)
Other things I am still thinking about:
- Remover running boards
- Replace the wheels (after market???)
- Front bumper refresh (repaint or replace with aftermarket) - rest of the paint is actually quite good
- Refresh seats (firmer bolsters and recover, maybe leather) - current fabric is in decent condition given the age
- Supercharger kit
- HID Upgrade, still need to decide on which kit to go with
Many of you have much more experience with these 3rd Gen T4R's than I have - interested in what you all think about the plan?
