Back seat swap

Has anybody swapped a 2001-2002 rear seat into a 96-98? I'm wanting to put a rear seat in my 98 so it has the safety anchor and tethers for my daughters forward facing car seat. Any help or advice would be appreciated!

I've heard this is a thing and fairly easy to do. I'm interested in this.

I have done it and yes, direct bolt-in.

From the build thread:
I have LATCH upper anchors. Apparently this is as close to LATCH as the 3rd gen gets, nothing near the seatbelts. Thanks to JBurt for sparking my curiosity about that.

and the newer seats come with places in the seat bottoms to put the headrests when the backs are down. The 96 didn't have either of those things.

It was worth it to me. $40 for more comfortable seats that better match the Mazda seats up front. Not a perfect match, but much better.

I'll check that thread you linked to, but do these later year seats have a shoulder belt setup for the center seat? This the biggest reason for me to buy a later year third gen as I have 3 kids and am not happy that the kid in the middle doesn't have a shoulder belt.

Would seriously consider a swap if so.

Where did you get the seats from?

Sorry, no center shoulder belt, it was pretty much exactly like what was in the 96 but better padding, the headrest holders, just the two headrests and the upper latch mechanism.

I hear you on the 3 kids thing! Thank goodness the age split had the first one out in college before the last one was out of the 5 point so I didn't have to figure out a middle belt. It did, however, look like aftermarket options were a possibility.

Damn. I'll look into the aftermarket options then.

Not sure how far apart your group is...I ended up with a Radian 65, a slim 5point car seat that lasted long enough to get down to 2 kids. They have a new name now, with different, perhaps better options. Sunshine kids, I think is the brand. One of the yotatech guys drove their truck up on one- it didn't collapse.

I made this thread when I was in your boat:

There was some interesting stuff flying around in there. Maybe no answers, but sometimes all creative thinking needs is a little goofing around.

Cool I'll check it out this evening when I finally make it home.

+1 for the Radian brand of car seats and their slim profile. Makes it easier to fit multiple car seats next to each other. Also, ours fits infants all the way up to kids who need to be in booster seats.

Also, 01-02 seats will be a direct bolt on. Backs will get you the forward facing anchors, and the bottoms will get you the head rest holders when the seats are folded.

Sorry typical off topicish tangent...

The 2001+ seats have better cushioning?

I really want to get late seats (for the headrest mounts) but they are just unfeasible to ship internationally... and I only know of one 2000+ truck in the UK, and its most definitely not being broken.

Ours are pretty uncomfortable in the back. Do the US ones have the reclining backs?

Better cushioning than what was in my 96, but not better than in my 99.
Our rear seat backs do not recline.

Are you sure?

By recline, we mean there are a few different "Click points" for the angle of the rear seat-back when you lift the peg each side (not a massive degree of variation but they do technically "Recline").

What mazda seats do you have up front?

Out of an older 323 iirc....NOT plug n' play. They just happened to meet my mounting width and style requirement and not have blood on them (junkyard). Will be going for something more sporty next time 'round.

Okay, mine don't on either truck. They latch into a static point with a latch that is either releasing or not released.

Unless I am misunderstanding you, which would not be uncommon. I am assuming the peg you are referring to is the one at the top corner of each seat-back. Certainly I'd love to learn if I'm wrong. :)

They are a direct bolt in. The easiest way to do it is to grab the whole back cargo area carpet that runs up the backs of the seats so the hole is already there for the car seat clips.
