Just bought a 2005 4Runner and all the lights work except the passenger side back-up light. I tried replacing the bulb, but that wasn't it and the fuse must be OK as all the other lights work. I tried pulling the small contact points on the bulb socket out a little to see if they weren't making proper contact, but that didn't help. Just wondering if that removable bulb socket could be the issue (I should check using the driver's side one), or if it is with the housing contacts or wiring? The driver's side works fine. Any suggestions?

Do you have a multimeter? If not, you can get them pretty cheap, or get a decent Fluke. Anyway, check for voltage at the socket. Also, make sure you have a ground. It's a pretty simple circuit. If you have good power, and a good ground, there may be corrosion on the contacts, or the bulb you installed may have even been bad.
If there's no power there, check continuity at the junction connector, J40/J41, which is located in the cargo area, driver's side wall under the window. I've included a picture to assist in locating (I marked what I believe is J40 & J41). It's obviously good up to that point since the other side is working.

swap bulbs side to side. verify the bulb is indeed good.
