Backspacing / Offset question

Hey all,

My current setup is 285/70r17 Duratracs on Sport wheels w/ Spidertrax 1.25" spacers. I'm getting a very slight rub on my JBA UCAs at full lock, and I've also wanted to get some aftermarket wheels for a while to ditch the spacers (simply because of the added steps they take to do work on the truck).

So, with that in mind, how much backspace / offset will I need in a 17x8 or 8.5 wheel to maintain the spacer stance that I have, plus a little to clear these UCAs? The UCA clearance really is just like a couple mm's maaaybe a half inch at most needed, so if it turns out that this requirement makes wheel shopping harder, then I'll just go back to plan A and grind them down a hair.

I would start backwards and find a wheel you like in the 17x8, 8.5 or 9 inch widths. Most of the offsets you'll find that will fit our rigs and clear UCA's are going to be any offset of +0 or less (negative offsets) for example a 17x9 -12mm offset would fit and give you a slightly poked stance similar to sport wheels with 1.25" spacers.

Good info! Thanks! So what's the advantage to going up from a 8 or 8.5" width to 9"? I just took a look and there are definitely a lot of options in the 9" width range.

Larger widths open the range of personal preference in wheel styles and offset availability mainly. A wider wheel can fit a wider tire but most of us are within the tire width range of any of those widths when running the common sized tire choices or an almost standard 285/70-17 size for lifted 4th gens. Theoretically a skinnier wheel may squeeze your tire to be a tad taller and prevent wheel rock rash but the gains in that 8-9" range are pretty negligible.

Good to know. So basically just find a wheel with the correct lug pattern that looks good, and disregard the wheel width so long as it's 8" and above? From there, just find something with -6 offset if it's 8" wide wheel, or -12 if it's 9" wide?

Appreciate the help. In my 3rd gen life was so simple with 32's on stock limited wheels. All I wanted was 33's and it's been such a pain. lol

for reference, I'm running Method NV 17x8.5 4.75 inch back spacing and 0 offset on 285/70/17 with JBA UCA's with no rubbing issues. I only ran spacers on stock wheels.

I'm quite fond of using willtheyfit.com to plug in measurements to get an idea of how spacers/adapters will effect the offset and fitment of my wheels and tires. I use it both on my Euro Sedan (Volvo) and 4Runner.

See Iceman's example with an 8.5 +0. So theoretically he could run a 8 +6 and still clear. It ALSO depends on tire brand sometimes they run different widths and larger side lugs despite being marketed at same sizing. Just find a wheel you like in the common fitments and it'll most likely work. Method, SCS, black rhino, XD, Icon, RRW, all make good fitments for Toyota among others.
