I installed the Philips LED bulbs and they were significantly brighter and work well in the city. Where there are things to reflect off of like other cars, shopping carts, or buildings.
Out on a pitch black road or trail where there is nothing to reflect against and you really need to see well beyond the back, they were ineffective.
I ended up mounting these inexpensive LED lights and they light up the road in the pitch black very well, plus they're only $17 for two. The same price as just LED bulbs....

I have them wired directly into the backup light connectors so whenever I shift into reverse they come on automatically.
