Bad frame rot. Is it too bad?!

Could one not use the epoxy putty that they sell to patch up the holes in the frame as an alternative?

Since it is a good stress point on the frame (Holding up the control arm) I would not use an epoxy on that. I would do like everyone else is doing and weld a new plate on.

I have some good surface rust on mine going to try this for a couple coats and them spay paint over it. Rust Converter Spray, Extend Rust Neutralizer Directions from Loctite Adhesives

For inside the frame was going to use the Eastwood with the cool spray nozzle.

What if the holes are not at or near the stress point that holds up the control arm?

I would say it all depends on where its at and how bad it is but if its has any holes in the frame next to stress points I wouldn't use epoxy thats my .02. If its a small hole not next to a stress point I might use it.

I guess it all depends how much bigger the holes get after cutting out the rust then. What I have doesn't appear to be a structural issue yet, as long as I get to it relatively soon.

Well that neutralizer will help stop it from spreading especially if you do it right (sand, prime, and paint after and do the inner frame). Yes for "Rot" the best thing to do is cut and replace.

I am right now redoing the paint on my chassis. My axle rusted through near the fill plug after I had painted it 2 years ago with eastwood products. Maybe it was already to far gone. I researched products for a good bit and decided to get Masterseries. They also have an internal frame coating that you can get by the quart. Then you apply it with an undercoating gun. I spent over 100 on the internal chassis paint from Eastwood 2 years ago.

the problem with these 4runner frames is that they are rotting from the inside out , one of the bad spots on my frame still had the paint on the outside of the frame . never would know its rotted but i could stick a screwdriver right through it .

Little update on this. After spending hours of research and several calls to eastwood I finally purchased everything I think I'll need. I have a guy cutting out the rotted area of the frame and replacing it with new metal. Hard part is taking off the control mount and then re-welding it back in place. Here's a list of what I purchased.

-6 cans of Internal Frame Coating with 18" spray nozzle.
-Eastwood Pre Painting Prep - 30 oz
-4 cans of Rust Encapsulator Black 15 oz.aerosol
-6 cans Extreme Chassis Black Satin 14 Ounce Aerosol

It all came to a total of $334 shipped after a 10% promotional discount. My original plan was to use POR15 but, after my research I decided to go with Chassis paint. Hope this is enough to cover the frame and rear axle. I will post up with photos as soon as I get it taken care of.

That seems like a lot of cans of the Internal Frame Coating...are you sure you'll need that much? I was planning on buying just two cans (one for each side)...and now I'm second guessing.

How much were you quoted for the welding work? I'm going to be shopping for a welder this spring to patch up some holes...however my rust isn't quite affecting the control mount like yours.

Yeah but its a lot cheaper then buying a new frame! It should be a fun little project. I have to do all this to my buddies 97 T100 too so I need to learn on mine. I will post up as soon as I get to it. Taking it to the welder March 6 and picking it up March 11.

Alright my buddy got all this done while I was out of state. If you live in the KY area I would highly recommend this dude just PM me.

He cut out the old rusty area:

Then sanded the rust off of everything:

Welded the new metal in:

Then cleaned it all up:

Lots of prep work. Then coated inside of frame (no photos) and painted everything with rust encapsulator and then painted over that with eastwood frame paint.

Good job , looks good . People see frame rot and think its the end of the truck . Little bit of know how and some elbow grease go long way ! That rear diff looks brand new .
