Bad gas mileage.

My truck was regularly seeing 16-17 around town til I started to throw a CEL and now it's in the shop with a possible TPS issue and a coupel of other things needed inspecting after a couple of summers of off road abuse.

When my issues started my MPGs dropped to 13.5 using no 4wd during that tank so it's a bad problem right now.

I'll know more by the tomorrow.

Winter gas is one cause. I am not sure about the fuel formulation in your area, but I am seeing more fuel with 10% ethanol which also causes your mpg's to drop. Before filling, check the pump to see if there is ethanol in the mixture.

So I have no idea what's going on. I thought my gas mileage was bad before, and it is if what I'm reading here is correct, but now it's HORRIBLE. I was getting about 217 miles on a full tank on average. In the last 2 months it has dropped down to about 190 if I'm lucky. It's a 99 runner with just over 80k miles. Any ideas??

That is horrible gas mileage. Do you drive around in 4WD all the time?
 
hmmm....have you acutally been calculating your mpg? The gas meter on our trucks (specifically the 3rd gens) seem to be infamous for error. My light usually comes on about 200-220, but I'm able to drive another 50 miles before I start sweatin it.
 
I started getting poor fuel mileage, about 16 mpg. highway at above average speeds.
I replaced the air filter, cleaned air flow sensor, changed from 10w 30 to 5w 30 heavy duty mobile synthetic and now I'm getting about 19.5 mpg highway while driving at above average speeds.
 
jayo...i filled up this morning and i had gotten 13.8 mpg this tank...you're driving a 99, what kind of mileage are you getting per gallon?

When was the last time your truck had a tune up?
 
in my old runner, N/A, i could pull over 300 miles in a tank. Of course I would throw a few extra gallons in the fill neck. I can usually fit 2-4 gallons just in the fill neck. I also keep in mind that when the gas light comes on I have roughly 50 miles til empty

Now i have be getting about 200-250 miles a tank and when I fill up I usually can put around 9-10 gallons in. My gas gage is broken so instead of getting it fixed I usually just fill up when I see that i've gone 200 miles on the odo.

I usually average 18-20 mpg with mostly city driving, and a pretty heavy foot.

Filling up the neck is a bad idea and can harm emissions parts especially the charcoal cansiter which will become saturated with gas and fail. Gas needs room in the tank to expand in hot weather so you shouldn't overfill and maybe after the first click fill it in the neck one more time and it will funnel down and then stop.

When I fill up on "empty" I usually fillup with just over 15 gallons.
 
in the summertime I was used to getting between 16-17 all around driving. In the winter it drops to about 15 on average unless I've got the rack up top, then it drops to low 14's. I just recently replaced my o2 sensor, mass airflow sensor, and put a can of 44k in and I'm back in the 15's. This is my second winter with it, but my first winter with the lift, rack, intake, and exhaust. Last winter I held a steady 16...
 
I just saw that the tank capacity is 18.5 gallons, every time I fill up I get like 15.5 in mine so I could prolly get alot more off a tank of gas than I get, I'm just gonna carry around a jug of gas and drive it till it's bone dry

that must be kilometres, my light comes on between 370-390 depending on 4x4 usage. that's 230-240 miles. i drive it to 450 and still have 6-8 litres left. i wanna try for 500k one day, that's like 310 miles.
 
Im getting 189 to a tank. From full till the light is on for a few miles. What is wrong. Its not in 4wd or awd and thats regular driving. Its killing me. Thats the reason I want to get rid of the runner.

Do you drive with a heavy foot? Last tune up? Your tires and lift will add wind/rolling resistance which cuts down MPG too
