Bad gas mileage.

I get roughly 245 miles per tank. It varies, depending on how I'm driving. haha

Wow. On a recent road trip, I consistently got 260-275 miles until the gas light came on. Then, the most I ever put in was 13.5 gallons...so there was still 5 gallons in there, or about 90-100 miles worth.

Im getting 189 to a tank. From full till the light is on for a few miles. What is wrong. Its not in 4wd or awd and thats regular driving. Its killing me. Thats the reason I want to get rid of the runner.

Probably cause you have so many mods. Lol. What do you expect with 285's, hundreds of pounds of extra weight, and a taller vehicle.

I've been tracking my mileage on my '97 since buying it a couple months ago. I've read on the net that my '97 should get roughly around 16 mpg in town, and roughly 20 mpg on the highway. I've had a few different situations so far - with regards to "all in-town driving, or mostly "highway miles". And also pulling my utility trailer (in-town and on the highway). With mostly in-town or pulling the trailer, I'm getting roughly 14 to 17 mpg. And with mostly doing highway travel, I'm seeing roughly 19 to 20 mpg.

For a vehicle that's over 330,000 kms (205,000 miles), and getting close to the "expected" numbers.....I'm pretty impressed.

I wonder what would happen if I spent the time to clean the fuel systems up and add a CAI.

All stock drive train.
And now Im starting on lift/tires Guess i may look at gettin a new foot cause mine to heavy:sobbing:

In my 98 T4R 4cyl I usually get 350 hwy.
its only got 100,000 thought so I guess its because I always maintain it early and dont slam on the pedal hard.

I regularly get 21-22 on the hwy with my V6. Keep it under 70, draft semi's (not too close, make sure they can see you) when you can, and enjoy the scenery.

I drive like a 40 y/o man that I am. I go 5-10 mph over speed limit,don't race granda's light to light and just drive normal - I get 17 + in city driving and if I fill the tank and get on the highway,get off the highway an hour or so later and fill up,then do the math my pure highway # is 20 like the window sticker says - best I ever got was 21 of old man driving- what tire PSI do you high mpg guys use? and which tires ? 4x4 or 2wd?

I have 4x4,v-6, Firestones,and run em at 34 psi

My mileage is about 310 to a tank now... mostly all city, usually a consistent 16-18 mpg. Highway is usually no more than 60 miles per tank, but when it's more, I love seeing 20's.

The best I've gotten recently was 500 kms (310 mi) on a trip home from Ottawa.

I averaged 125 km/h (~80 m/h) and had neck filled it on the last fill up. I stopped when the gas light had been on for ~ 10 kms.

1998 4cyl, 5 speed had both the 02 sensors replaced in the last year and just had the plugs changed before the trip.

I did have a control arm bushing problem which may have brought down mileage a bit.

I average about 450 kms a tank when driving around town (usually has a couple hours of 4x4/idling every tank)

Got 310 out of my last tank with a mixture of city and highway driving, typically staying around 65 on the highway. Recently cleaned MAF, and throttle body up next are plugs, we'll see if that improves anything.

mine also.....have gone from 390 per tank to 330 per tank...........someone here suggested "winter gas".....not sure what that is.........but I am disapointed.

gas is mixed differently from summer to winter

ditto. thou I doubt 4th noob's don't know 3rd gen has much smaller gas tank :moon: 3rd gen 18.5 gal vs. 4th gen 23 gal.


I got about 19.5mpg rarely going over 65mph 'cause the freeways here are all 55mph max. 70% hwy 30% local, not much of traffic in general. 32" tires, 4.11 gears, 160k miles, 99 V6 5spd. mpg is calibrated based on +3% tire size using Scangauge II.

I got 18mpg during the winter due to higher ethanol content in the winter formula.

when my rig was stock i was getting around 20-21 mpg highway, now with the lift 33x12.5 tires and lots of weight in bumpers i average about 16.5. my light comes on around 250 miles or so and i usually can put in 15 gallons. this is in a 99 v6 auto with about 260,000 on the odo. I replaced the timing belt and water pump about 50k miles ago, i run amsoil in the engine and flush the transmission about once a year. i run my Mickey Thompson at's at 35 psi

Wow. My 99 SR5 with 150k will barely make 200 miles per tank. No lift, 275 tires, regular maintenance. You guys are lucky :/ something must be up with my truck
